Welcome!
The music is "Salt Creek". The area where most of my ancestors settled in Indiana is Brown County (it's all of that pretty area between college town, Bloomington, and industrial town, Columbus). Running across the middle of Brown County you find "Salt Creek"! My Marlett, Chafin, Mobley and Roberts lines settled along Salt Creek. The other creek through Brown County is Bean Blossom Creek. My McCoy, Robertson, Richardson, McClary and Young lines settled in along the Bean Blossom in both Brown and Monroe Counties.

Northwest Indiana Genealogy Research Services
First about me: I am the coordinator of the Lake County, Indiana US GenWeb page . I have posted many resources on that page and plan to continue doing so. I have also done a lot of lookups for visitors of the page, made many photocopies of microfilm, and made numerous trips to the Lake County Public Library and well ...it's getting expensive. I'm also a single mom which means I am toting 2 kids along on most of those trips. And the Rootsweb project is only volunteer, I do not receive compensation.
To help with some of the costs I'm incurring, I've decided to offer some research services, to assist those of you at a distance, but at reasonable cost. Most of the prices listed only cover gas, postage and copy fees. (Feel free to add a donation towards getting more records copied for the Lake County Page.)
Here's what I can do for you: Note: Unless you have sent a large amount of money, there is no refund if I cannot locate a record. My prices are low enough that they mainly cover gas and time, and I usually spend at least a half hour or more per request.
If I don't find your exact request, I may try to locate your ancestor's whereabouts in other resources to establish their connection to Lake County....meaning if I find more than what you ask for, I will send that information as a bonus. I will exhaust all possible resources if I cannot find the exact information.

FEDERAL LAND SERIES
Consists of a five-part Federal Land Series by noted genealogist, Clifford Neal Smith. Originally published by the American Library Association between 1972 and 1986, these four books (Volume 4 was originally published in two parts) list the public land grants made by the federal government and the State of Virginia to settlers in the US territories between 1788 and 1835. These books provide genealogists with important tools for tracing the westward movement of families in the largely undocumented migration into the Old Northwest Territory. THE SET (Vol. I-IV), 6 x 9, includes 1,7772 pp. in all, maps, index, paperbound. (1982, 1973, 1980, 1982, 1986), repr. 1999. $210.00 Vol. II: 1799-1835. REVOLUTIONARY WAR BOUNTY-LAND WARRANTS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. This volume furnishes evidence of Revolutionary War military service inasmuch as it indexes all names appearing in the summary registers of the General Land Office poertaining to grants of land in the US Military District of Ohio for 1799-1835. It also includes lists of some of the bounty-land warrants exchanged for script. The tracts located in the calendar are shown in a map included in the volume Contains an index of 10,000 names and a separate index to the tracts in the Military District. M-1033.

The Land that is now Indiana was once part of a great wilderness. By early 1700's, the wilderness was called New France, a few settlers, fur traders and explorers had seen this wild land, but few records were kept. Some explorers bought slaves with them, so it is very likely that blacks were among the first to explore Indiana. The first records of blacks in Indiana were written in 1746. There were forty white men and five Negroes in a French settlement on the Wabash River. This was the beginning of the city Vincennes; which is along Indiana's southwestern border. Some French settlers had Indian slaves, but soon the French were buying black men from trading post on the lower Mississippi River. In 1787, congress passed a group of laws called the Northwest Ordinance. One of the Laws indicated that there would be no slavery. Slavery was legal when Virginia still owned the land which is now Indiana. Slave holders soon found ways to bring slaves into the territory as long-term indentured servants. Substantial debates continue about the status of blacks in the state. Indiana was perceived as a hostile state toward people of color during the most unfriendly years of 1816-1865. Many thought that indentured servitude was just another form of slavery. In 1831, legislators passed a bill to keep 'Negroes' out of Indiana.
