Indiana was admitted to the Union, on December 11, 1816, as 19th State.
Nicknamed " The Hoosier State"
Indiana's State Motto, " The Crossroads of America ", was adopted in 1937.
Though Corydon was selected and served as the first state capitol,
by 1825, Indianapolis became the capitol of Indiana.
Genealogy and History NEWS!!
  • The Taming of the Wilderness: Indiana's Transition from Indian Hunting Grounds to Hoosier Farmland: 1800 to 1875 , by Leon Hesser - This new book approaches 19th Century Indiana history through early documents, letters and the author's own Quaker family history. It boldly addresses Native American and slavery issues which arose during this era of Indiana's history, while not neglecting the simple, day-to-day lifestyles of the early settlers, as related by those who lived during this era. It is available for sale as an e-book or in either paperback or hardcover.

Kiefer Genealogy The Home Page of A. Lawrence Kiefer Web site and genealogy database updated on Nov 28, 2001 Update I now have both the Kiefer Genealogy site and the LCHS - Lawrence Central High School, Lawrence (Indianapolis), Indiana - Class of 1970 Alumni site up and operational! Yahoo! And the redirection on the old page is working. Please update your bookmarks to whatever site you're interested in. For the LCHS Alumni site, click here - http://www.LCHSClassOf1970.org Since the LCHS site is a separate site, there will be plenty of room for photos, etc. Possibly a message folder and some other stuff. Possibly a digital image folder of the entire 1970 yearbook. I've been informed that one person lost theirs in a fire. If I feel ambitious, I may put it on CD-ROM. I will update this site during the transfer. After the transfer, I hope to be adding additional search capabilities and more. Additionally, with Front Page 2002 support on the new web host, the site will be much easier to maintain and publish in the manner I'd like to achieve. The old site ( www.users.qwest.net/~lawrencek

Did you know that Gilkison is the 22259 th most common surname in the United States (according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 1990 name files )? And that Corson is the 6770 th most common? Presumably, one of those two names is what led you here (although we won't turn away others!). According to the same census data, the Gilkison name is found most often in Kentucky and Oregon.
1990 Census data map for distribution of Gilkison surname I have been interested in genealogy since about 1991, around the time my father passed away, and I've been working on it ever since (funny how events like that always spur you to these pursuits)... However, if it seems like it's been a while since the files have been updated, it's because I work on this information in surges; I'll work rather intensely for a couple of weeks, trying to dig up more info, then I might go a month or two (or three, etc.) without doing anything at all. Everything you see in these pages is all the information I have at the moment. The names are indexed a couple of ways if you want to see all of the names in my family, try the Index of SURNAMES , or try browsing through all of the individuals in the PERSONS index I use Family Tree Maker to maintain my family records; to get the pages you see here, I export its file to the
