Education and Religion Before the Civil War
Although the Indiana Constitution called for the establishment of “a general system of education, ascending in a regular graduation, from township schools to a state university, as soon as circumstances will permit,” no formal system of education, however, before 1851, when a new state constitution was adopted. Schools that were built before 1851 were funded by the county, city, or township they occupied. Many of these early schools charged tuition. Churches and individuals maintained many good private schools, but they were generally not free (i.e. Notre Dame). The Quakers probably had the best elementary schools, while many ministers, especially Presbyterians, taught schools. There were several obstacles to public schooling.

News Tuesday, Apr 08, 2003 Breaking News Posted on Thu, May. 09, 2002 Military schools get money to spruce up campuses The Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute received millions of federal dollars in order to spruce up their Monterey campuses, Rep. Sam Farr announced today. DLI received $1.4 million to improve drainage around its facilities. The Navy school received more than $9 million to begin replacing Spanagel Hall and a fence around campus. The money came from a $393 billion Department of Defense bill, which funds military construction and family housing, wages and other benefits for service members. Also Thursday, Congress granted $75,000 to the Fort Ord Reuse Authority to use toward building houses at Fort Ord. The money came from last year's spending bill for two congressional committees on which Farr sits. FORA will use the money to design housing programs at Fort Ord, said Michael Houlemard, the agency's executive director. email this print this Find a Job ... and more...

In an October 1, 2001 news release Governor Frank O'Bannon indicated "students who get financial aid from the state will not lose any semesters of eligibility if they are called into active military duty." SSACI has been asked to "guarantee the students eligibility for financial aid is extended for the time they are on active duty. Normally students are eligible for eight semesters." Also, "under normal procedures, students have 10 years in which to use their eight semesters of eligibility for state financial aid. O'Bannon directed SSACI to extend, by the length of time served, the 10-year limitation for students called into military service." MILITARY ACTIVATION INFORMATION FOR PURDUE STUDENTS The following information is intended for those called to military active duty during the current semester at Purdue University.

POSTED: 12:57 p.m. EST March 19, 2003
UPDATED: 11:54 a.m. EST March 20, 2003
INDIANAPOLIS Schools across Indiana are taking a hard look at their security measures with the Homeland Security Department raising the nation's terror alert status and a looming war with Iraq. Video Plan Put In Place In Indianapolis' Decatur Township, if classes are in session when the United States goes to war, schools will be put under an external lockdown even if the federal government doesn't raise the terrorism alert level to the highest point, RTV6's Kristi Tedesco reported. During an external lockdown, entrances to schools would be closed. Parents would be allowed to enter, but only through main entrances. "Parents will be able to come in if they want to take their kids home. They're more than welcome to do that," Decatur Township Assistant Superintendent Dave Rather said. "They'll have to sign in and show identification." The external lockdown would continue until an immediate threat is ruled out, Tedesco reported.
