Cloning Bans Could Have Impact on
Infertility Treatments
By Stephen Smith
January 9, 1998 RealAudio 2.0 14.4
The news this week that a maverick Chicago researcher intends to defy President Clinton's voluntary moratorium on human cloning may accelerate Congressional efforts to make cloning illegal. Infertility specialists warn that bills now before Congress might go beyond cloning to stifle research on important new infertility therapies. INFERTILITY RESEARCHERS TAKE PAINS to define cloning in the narrowest terms, as a process that would use the nucleus from a single mature cell and place it in a woman's egg from which the nucleus had been removed - then jolting that hybrid cell to life with electricity. No sperm need be involved, so the baby's genetic material would all come from just one person. While many infertility specialists recoil at the prospect of such "solo" cloning, there are critical aspects of the process that could help infertile couples. A number of infertility programs across the country are working on treatments that might be called "near-cloning." Doctor Jamie Grifo is a leading infertility researcher at New York University.

She has been studying infertility and reproductive technologies for more than twenty years, a project that grew out of her own experience with infertility. Her work includes a general study of people's experiences with infertility, which has resulted in the publication of three University of California Press books: Healing the Infertile Family: Strengthening Your Relationship in the Search for Parenthood, Disrupted Lives: How People Create Meaning in a Chaotic World, and The Elusive Embryo: Consuming the New Reproductive Technologies. She is also the author, with Robert Nachtigall, of several articles on donor insemination. A. Finding Clues About Infertility in Yeast
Narrator: This is Science Today. The same yeast used to brew beer and make bread has given researchers at the University of California, San Francisco possible insight into a male infertility syndrome in which sperm cells stop developing. Researcher Shelley Chu found a parallel to this syndrome, called testicular maturation arrest, in yeast spores. Chu: We were characterizing a gene which is required for a transition in yeast sporulation which also occurs in sperm formation and now we understand molecularly how this transition occurs in yeast and we're proposing and it's likely, that similar molecular mechanisms occur in sperm formation. Narrator: Chu and her colleagues have called this gene NDT80.
