The Center of Reproductive Medicine Vicki L. Schnell, M.D. Medical Director T he Center of Reproductive Medicine (CORM) is a full service medical facility dedicated to the treatment of infertility and related conditions. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Vicki Schnell , the center has focused on providing the latest in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) that will give each patient the greatest chance at achieving pregnancy. Since April of 1997, CORM has performed all ART procedures at our in-office surgical center. The center has a fully equipped procedure room, state of the art IVF laboratory and adjacent recovery area that offers both privacy and comfort for a less stressful atmosphere for the patient. We feel the addition of this surgical suite has been a key to our success. Everyone is more relaxed and our staff can maintain better control of environmental factors that may adversely affect outcomes. Reduced costs and decreased patient charges have also been a major benefit of in-office care and has allowed us to pursue a more aggressive managed care role for our patients. Controlling our costs has been the reason why CORM has consistently been the least expensive provider of ART services in the Houston area. Lower costs do not mean lower quality . CORM has always been driven to provide the latest in proven technological advances that offer the patient the best chance of achieving a successful pregnancy. Dr. Schnell’s philosophy of education and training has kept her staff up to date on the latest breakthroughs in Assisted Reproductive Technology and Infertility therapy. CORM’s continuing education policy encourages the staff to seek opportunities for improvement by taking courses, attending seminars and visiting other successful ART programs that have demonstrated innovation or exceptional success. We think you’ll find our staff well informed on the latest developments in the field of reproductive medicine.

Glossary of Infertility Terms Female Infertility
Adhesions: Rubbery or filmy bands of scar tissue often caused by a previous infection or surgery or endometriosis that attach to the surface of reproductive organs and also the bowels or bladder. Adhesions to or around the fallopian tubes and ovaries may block a tube or prevent an egg (oocyte) from meeting with a sperm.
Amenorrhea: the absence of menstruation
Anovulation: lack of ovulation
Artificial Insemination: Prepared or washed sperm is placed into the uterus using a specialized catheter.
Autologous Endometrial Coculture: Growth of embryos on top of your own endometrial (womb) cells.
Basal Body Temperature (BBT): a woman's temperature upon first awakening in the morning. A rise of about one degree Fahrenheit is seen in the middle of the cycle to help predict ovulation. Charting of these temperatures is very popular but can be imprecise.
Blastocyst: a more developed embryo, often referred to as a preimplantation embryo. It begins to implant into the uterine lining 6-7 days after fertilization.
Bromocriptine: used to treat abnormally high prolactin (pituitary hormone responsible for breast milk production) levels that may result in infertility and amenorrhea. Prolactin may be overproduced due to pituitary brain tumors, as a side effect of various medications, chest wall trauma, or breast implants.

Treatment Options
Infertility affects one in six American couples. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 15% of women of childbearing age have received infertility treatment, including medication or simple surgeries to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and complex laboratory-based procedures.
Choosing the most appropriate treatment requires a comprehensive evaluation to identify the cause of infertility. Although several types of specialists can diagnose this disease, only those with subspecialty training and experience in reproductive endocrinology and the assisted reproductive technologies (ART) can offer the full range of available treatment options. In many cases, the advanced technologies are the best and most cost-effective solution.
US clinics report ART-related information annually for publication by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), the CDC and RESOLVE, a national infertility patient advocacy group. This data includes the number and type of ART cycles performed, the related cause of infertility and the success rates. Of the 77,000 cycles performed at 360 clinics in 1998 - the most recent published year - 24% were linked to male-related infertility. Female factors such as tubal disease, ovulatory dysfunction endometriosis and other uterine problems accounted for 56%. Another 12% were related to immunological problems, chromosomal abnormalities, chemotherapy for cancer or other serious illness in the female. For the remaining 8%, the cause was "

Chinese Medicine and Assisted Reproductive Technology for the Modern Couple
by Roger C. Hirsh, OMD, L.Ac. Homepage Back
BACKGROUND
There are several advantages to using Traditional Chinese Medicine as an approach to heightening a couple's fertility.
SOME ADVANTAGES OF USING TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
  • TCM sees the person as an integral Mind/body organism, thereby does not treat just symptoms/diseases. TCM ventures to stimulate the bodies natural healing potential by treating root causes rather than just symptoms. TCM, used in the treatment of infertility, minimizes undesired side effects and accumulated toxicity from invasive procedures and drug therapies, known and unknown. Traditional Chinese medicine may be used to strengthen and balance one's general health so that IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, ICSI, AHT and TET procedures are more effective. The TCM patient derives general health benefits and endocrine system balancing from specific acupuncture and herbal regimes. Pregnancy becomes easier to achieve and postpartum recuperation happens faster. Medical studies have been done in China to verify this type of whole body health enhancement. The widespread use of TCM suggests that it is a complete traditional medical health care system and can be used with or without the integration of Western medical techniques. The integration of Western medicine, as we know it in America, began in the Orient less than a century ago. It is called INTEGRAL CHINESE MEDICINE (ITCM). Ancient medical techniques of acupuncture and herbs utilized with modern procedures, seem to work best.
