Male Infertility
Russell A. Foulk, M.D.
(published in the Nevada Resolve newsletter, 1998)
There are over three million infertile couples in the United States. Factors affecting men account for about 40% of the causes. Until the past few years, many of these couples were only able to become parents through using donor sperm or adoption. Fortunately, increased focus on male infertility has led to a series of recent advances in the medical world. Now, virtually all forms of male infertility are treatable. The average ejaculate contains over 100 million sperm. A common question is why are so many required for conception to occur. The reason lies in the tremendous journey sperm must make from the top of the vagina (after penile emission) to the end of the fallopian tube where the egg awaits. Relative to a grown man’s size , he must swim across the Pacific Ocean to match the distance. If there were 100 million of him, perhaps some would make it. However, if there are fewer numbers or half are crippled, the likelihood is much smaller. The World Health Organization recommends there be a minimum of 20 million sperm available for effective conception to occur with intercourse. Male factor infertility occurs when the numbers are less than this.

Home Alternative Medicine Stress Management Conditions/ Treatments ... Media INFERTILITY Alternative Medicine and Therapies - Female Naturopathy A healthy, balanced diet; regular, moderate exercise; and a positive attitude are essential for general health and fertility. A naturopathic practitioner may advise you to avoid caffeine, which is suspected of interfering with ovulation, to maintain a normal weight, and to eat only organic fruits and vegetables, grown without the use of potentially toxic chemical pesticides. You will also be advised to restrict alcohol, since excessive amounts increase the hormone prolactin, which may disturb the menstrual cycle. Smoking is also seen as harmful, reducing blood flow to the cervix and inhibiting the action of cilia, the tiny hairs in the fallopian tubes that guide the egg toward the uterus. Splashing hot and cold water alternately on the genital area helps to stimulate local circulation. (See Hydrotherapy) Do not take a hot bath before sexual intercourse, as sperm need cool temperatures to survive. Nutritional therapy A balanced diet is essential for the body to function property. Supplements help improve fertility. Lack of protein and calories from malnourishment is a cause of infertility, so adequate nutrition should be the basis for treatment of any illness, including infertility. Eat pumpkin seeds for zinc, which is important for the health of reproductive organs. Bee pollen and royal jelly are extremely nutrient-rich bee products that help stimulate fertility. Avoid coffee, tea and colas; caffeine promotes infertility.

Due to various reasons, there are a growing number of women today that have difficulty getting pregnant. Although Western (modern) medicine is getting very sophisticated in its treatment of infertility, the majority of the treatments do not succeed. According to Chinese Medicine, there are two main reasons for this lack of success. First is the inability of Western medicine to recognize the reciprocity of body and soul. Secondly, Western medicine ignores the importance of the woman’s constitution. Chinese medicine explains that negative emotions can adversely effect the reciprocity of body and soul. For example, stress, resentment, frustration, pent up emotions and anger can damage the energy found in the liver. This damage in turn, connects to the blood and the reproductive system which can make fertility impossible. Chinese Medicine may help to restore the natural flow of the liver energy by reducing stress and other negative emotions with the help of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, diet and/or changes in lifestyle. Once the body and soul are in harmony, pregnancy has a better chance to occur.

ur Reproductive Medicine Program is committed to performing research that will help couples who have experienced recurrent miscarriages, multiple pregnancy losses or repeated in vitro fertilization failures achieve a successful pregnancy. Many of our patients have heard the statements, "You were unlucky this time, try again." "It is God's will; you can always adopt." "It was meant to be." "Next time we will try donor eggs; your eggs are too old." Our scientific research and experimental treatments are showing us that patients do not necessarily have to accept such statements; there are other options that can be tried that can lead to a successful pregnancy. If you are new to our site, please check out the Introduction to Our Program , written by Dr. Alan Beer, the director and founder of the Reproductive Medicine Program. Conceiving a baby is the most natural thing in the world, but unfortunately it is not always the simplest. Between one in six people and one in ten couples experience fertility problems. Behind those harsh statistics lays a particular kind of heartache that only would-be parents and those who work closely with them truly understand. At the Zhai Clinic, we are dedicated to enhancing your chances of having a baby. For nearly ten years, couples have come to us with every kind of fertility problem. Many of our female patients are in their mid-thirties to mid-forties. We treat both men and women using Traditional Chinese Medicine. Some of our patients simultaneously undergo assisted conception programmes: others have no medical intervention other than the treatment they receive here. We are very proud of our success rates with both groups. Whatever the cause of your infertility, we will do our very best to overcome it and to help you to achieve the pregnancy you seek. Male Infertility
Because so much attention, progress, and publicity have been given to the treatment of female infertility, most patients do not know about the tremendous advances now available for treating male infertility. Detecting male infertility is more difficult than fertility problems in women. Even though everything may appear normal, men have fertility problems when their sperm count is low, does not exist at all, or sperm goes into the bladder rather than out as in a normal ejaculation. There are many different types of treatments available today including antibiotics or hormone treatments, but most of the problems can only be corrected by using specialized techniques in the laboratory on the sperm. If you know or suspect that you have a male factor fertility problem such as a vasectomy, born without a vas, failed vas reversal, extremely low sperm count, spermatogenetic arrest, or sertoli cell only syndrome, we would be happy to discuss treatment options with you.

Welcome ! . . .
The Center was founded in 1995 by Dorothy J. Roach, M.D. , to better accommodate the expansion of services offered through a successful IVF (in vitro fertilization) program she helped establish at Houston Northwest Medical Center. Dr. Roach and her staff at North Houston Center for Reproductive Medicine have the expertise and the facilities to make the latest advanced reproductive technologies available to infertile couples. This specialized care is conveniently provided in the northwest area of Houston. Where to turn for help. Infertility is a medical problem that affects approximately one out of every six couples in America. It is a disease that affects men and women equally. The complete evaluation of infertility consists of a series of tests that will identify a treatable cause in at least 90% of couples and although the remaining 10% of couples' infertility will be considered unexplained, successful treatment options are available for all. When should a couple be seen by a Reproductive Endocrinologist?

Because the Kidney Zang is related to reproduction, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) often views the Kidneys as involved in both male and female infertility. In women, however, the Eight Extraordinary Channels, particularly the Chong and Ren Meridians, may be involved as well. The reasons for this are complex. It may be said that the Kidneys’ energy is divided into Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang, both ultimately deriving from the Kidney Jing. These Fundamental Substances in turn are responsible for nourishing the Chong and Ren Meridians, which support reproductive capacity. Other Zang may be involved as well. Because emotional disharmony, which causes Qi Stasis, lies at the root of many energetic imbalances, the Liver, which is responsible for the free flow of Qi, often is thought to be involved. This concept is particularly important because the Liver channel wraps around the genitals and, in men, is closely related to reproductive capability. Apart from disorders in the Zang Fu, disruptions in the Fundamental Substances can contribute to infertility. Blood Stasis and Phlegm Stasis, which can prevent the proper circulation of Qi and Blood and disrupt reproductive capabilities, are common causes. These disharmonies usually result from overwork, improper diet, sexual intemperance, emotional disharmonies, and constitutional factors.

TCM treatment for infertility focuses on devising herb and acupuncture formulas for the specific Pattern of Disharmony, differentiated by signs and symptoms. In many cases, however, whatever the cause of the imbalance, Kidney Zang should always be treated as well. Traditional Chinese Medicine may be used alone as a treatment for infertility or combined with Western medicine. Recent research in China on the fertility-enhancing effects of TCM has helped it become an important complementary treatment modality in the United States. In China, practitioners of TCM regard herbal medicine as the primary treatment modality and acupuncture as the second modality. Qi Gong is rarely mentioned as a treatment option in TCM literature. All couples that fail to conceive should undergo a complete medical examination by a physician to determine the cause of the infertility. If the cause is a congenital or structural abnormality, TCM usually does not prove effective. Also, because infertility may result from many different causes, couples should consider which type of medical practice would yield the best results. It is important, therefore, for couples seeking infertility treatment to have thorough and frank discussions with their health care providers to fully understand their condition, recent clinical research, and treatment options.

Chinese medicine Can Enhance Your Fertility Treatment. Another major cause ofinfertility in Chinese medicine is the Deficiency of Kidney Chi.
http://www.nancyrakela.com/infertility.html
Chinese Medicine Can Enhance Your Fertility Treatment. Nancy Rakela, O.M.D., L.Ac. has helped many couples with the challenges of infertility through the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine. She has knowledge of the latest infertility procedures and medications and has expertise in integrating Chinese Medicine with western assisted reproductive techniques. She is also very easy to communicate with. Early Chinese medical literature dating back 2000 years discusses fertility treatment for both men and women by regulating the menstrual cycle in women and increasing and strengthening the sperm in men Chinese medicine treats the body's natural healing energies by treating the whole person-body, mind and spirit. In this way Chinese medicine treats not just the symptoms but the root cause of the problem. Chinese medicine strengthens one's overall health and balances the endocrine system. It helps reduce the side effects and the accumulated toxicity of fertility medications and brings more blood flow to the uterus to enhance the outcome of assisted reproductive procedures.
According to Chinese Medicine, the following symptom patterns of Liver Chi Stagnation and Kidney Chi Deficiency are contributing causes of infertility. When we speak of the liver or of the kidney in Chinese medicine, we are not speaking of a problem with that specific organ. We are speaking of the energetic functioning of that organ and its related energy channel or meridian.
