"In an effort to better coordinate reading and literacy activities in California, a number of interested organizations and individuals met in San Francisco on June 4, 1997 under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Education's Region IX office. This consortia, the California Reads Roundtable, plans to meet on a regular basis and to use this website as a means to better coordinate reading activities in California Your participation and suggestions are invited." AskA+ Locator
The Virtual Reference Desk AskA+ Locator provides resources and links to experts that offer answers to questions that students might have. "The following is a list of all the sites organized by their subject matter. The list is in alphabetical order of subject, and then title name. There may be more than one site with the same name listed, but each link leads to an individual resource. " This is an excellent way for schools to allow and promote collaboration beyond the school site.

Hands-On Activities Science exploration and discovery can take place almost anywhere! When learners are actively engaged in science activities, they often gain better understanding of scientific principles, have better retention, and enjoy the learning process more than when they are taught through passive techniques. Encourage your family, friends, and people in your community to explore science. Use some of the activities suggested below, or visit science websites to find other interesting experiments to try.

Tomorrow's illiterate will not be the man who can't read; he will be the man who has not learned how to learn." report on a lecture tour
In early 2000, Professor Peter Underwood was invited by the President of the Commonwealth Library Association (COMLA), Elizabeth Watson, to be the keynote speaker at a seminar on information literacy and related matters, to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand. The discovery that another major conference of librarians (the Library and Information Association of New Zealand and Aotearoa) was to take place immediately prior to the seminar provided an opportunity for him to submit a paper for that, also. Subsequently, he received invitations to extend his stay to provide seminars at the University of Otago, Dunedin, and, on the North Island, to the members of the Tertiary Alliance. In all, he spent the period 13 - 29 October, visiting both the North and South Islands. The report, which is available as a PDF file, contains summaries of the papers of all speakers at the conferences and other events, together with hyperlinks to associated materials. Winter and Spring, 1998

98 -10 October, 1998 SUMMARY Information Literacy as a Liberal Art was offered as a two-credit course (GenSt 391) in Winter and Spring quarters, 1998. The course provided an introduction to information resources "in an electronic environment," and enrolled primarily student athletes and EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) students. Short pre- and post-tests assessed student experience, skill level and knowledge, and a post-course instructor debriefing yielded a set of recommendations based on the test results and experiences over the course of the quarter. Students showed increases from pre- to post-test in both self-reported and objectively assessed knowledge. Recommendations centered around integrating information and technology literacy into undergraduate education campus-wide. THE COURSE Information Literacy as a Liberal Art was taught by University of Washington (UW) librarians (two per section). The course presented information retrieval and use as a three-step process:
