WYCINANKI: A MATH/ART LESSON IN SYMMETRY
GRADES: 3-6
Wycinanki, Polish paper cut designs, are symmetrical.
MATERIALS:
  • construction paper 12x18
  • scissors
  • glue
  • pencils
  • authentic examples or reproductions of Wycinanki
METHOD:
  • Share with the students the following historical reference: Farming families in Poland in the early 19th century used brightly colored Wycinanki to decorate their homes before Easter. They show that intricate details can be created using basic materials. Wycinanki are cut with sheep shears with no preliminary sketching. Cut from folded paper, they are always symmetrical. Their subject matter reflects the Polish countryside and includes trees, flowers, roosters, birds, and sometimes men and women. There are many styles of Wycinanki found in the different regions of Poland.
  • Activity: After students have looked at examples and discussed the characteristics of Wycinanki, they will create their own paper cut designs. Each student will use a sheet of 12x18 paper. It should be folded in half lengthwise, and students will draw their designs first with pencil. They will then carefully cut out their designs. Completed pictures should be mounted on black paper (12x18).
  • Questions to ask during the lesson:
    • What things in our world are symmetrical?

Glossary of Terms "The litmus test of a good school is not its innovations but rather the solid, purposeful, enduring results it tries to obtain for its students." - Carl Glickman Successful schools are a result of many people planning together, working together, and taking shared responsibility and leadership for the success of all kids. Schools that focus their attention on improved student performance are where you’ll find high achieving students, committed staff, caring and involved parents and supportive communities. Our goal at Richmond Elementary School is excellence for all children. To reach this goal, we will need to focus on increasing the number of students who meet or exceed high academic and social standards, while at the same time, decreasing the gaps in achievement between different groups of students. Action Planning (AP) combines commitment, collaboration, and continuous effort toward achieving excellence by focusing on student performance results and other indicators that are closely associated with improved student learning.

    Course Expectations
Hello! Welcome to second semester. I would like to congratulate those of you who have passed my class. The others need to get their act together. Now we are at a fresh start so my dear students don't fall behind. I would like to make a few changes for this semester. The binder should be organized as follows: It will be divided in four sections. (1) Homework Turn-in, (2) Returned Work, (3) Test/Quiz and (4) Journals. Also, we will continue using the resposibility log. It is very important to bring in binder paper and own a notebook for math only. In addition, be ready to teach a lesson in one of the math sections in the book. My expectations for Algebra1, Geometry and Algebra 2 are the same. In the course there will be various assingnments. There will be daily homework assingnment, classwork assignments, self reflective journal entries, projects and Test/Quizes. In my course it is very important for students to come in prepared and follow the classroom rules which are stated in the green sheet. Therefore, it is very important that you come in with a great attitude and ready to work.

The fourth grade language arts program is organized by themes. Each theme incorporates reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. Second semester themes include American Snapshot s, Meet the Challenge , and Could it Really Happen? Fourth grade students recently completed a wonderful state report research project utilizing the library for in-depth research. We are continuing to study the regions of the United States. In late spring, we will begin a unit on Virginia. We are using a new math series, Everyday Mathematics. It is an exciting program with many hands-on activities. Games are used to enhance the practice of math sills. Additionally, integrated math and map skills are used to research other countries. In the second semester, we will focus on large number usage, estimation, percents, perimeter, area, and volume. We recently finished our beautiful solar system projects. The second semester areas of study include weather, electricity, machines - focussing on force and work, and physics investigations. We frequently integrate the computer with language arts, science, social studies, and math activities.

You can't help humming that tune while on your way to see the San Francisco Giants baseball team! Aunt Rosemary from Ohio is in town and wanted to take you to a Giants game. Unfortunately, the game was starting during your MATH class! However, your parents and math teacher gave you permission to attend the game with special conditions.
The deal is that you will report back to the rest of the math class all the different ways mathematics is used in the game of baseball. This should be a no brainer, or at least you hope!
