Cyberstalking and Internet Safety FAQ
by Rachel R. Hartman
Special thanks to attorney Jerry D. Rhoades, Jr., Jayne A. Hitchcock of WHOA , the Patrons of #callahans , and the women of HerDomain for their assistance with this FAQ. 1. What do I have to protect myself against on the Internet? Many crimes that are committed in the real world also occur on the Net. These include fraud and embezzlement, harassment, "stealing" an identity, or stalking. A lot of information is available about you on the Net, and an enterprising criminal can find out a lot about you and use this information to his/her disadvantage. A criminal could use basic information about you (discovered on the Net), and then engage in "social engineering"contacting your friends, co-workers, relatives, etc.to learn even more. 2. How can I protect myself on the Net? Be VERY careful to whom you give personal information and where you post information. Use a "nonsense" password that has no relation to you as a person; use a combination of numbers, symbols, and letters and make sure it is at least 6 characters long. Change your password frequently and NEVER give it out. Try not to keep it written down. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. If you are a woman, you may want to avoid usernames that are obviously female anytime you are on the Net, depending on the net.community you are participating in. (Your first initial and last name combine to make a good, easy to remember, and gender-neutral user name.) This includes e-mail, IRC channels or chat rooms, bulletin boards, etc. Learn what kind of anti-abuse procedures are in place in the community. IRC channels usually have two or more "ops" (operators) around, who have the power and authority to ban abusive users from the channel. If there is no op on a channel, contact the IRCops of your IRC server; these names are given when you first sign onto the server. Visit

President Bush Signs Child Internet Safety Legislation

In December of 2002 President Bush signed legislation that will create a new place on the Internet that is safe for our children to learn and to… Youth, Pornography and the Internet
The Internet is both a source of promise for our children and a source of concern. The promise is of Internet-based access to the information ageand the concern is over the possibility that harm might befall our children as they use the Internet. Realizing the promise in all its richness requires that adults put these concerns into perspective and also take responsible steps to address them. The purpose of this report is to help put the risks of Internet use by children into perspective and to provide a balanced assessment of different approaches that can help parents and other responsible adults to deal constructively with the risks that children face on the Internet, using as its primary illustrative example protecting kids from inappropriate sexually explicit material on the Internet. Using technology safely in schools The Internet and related technologies are powerful tools, which open up new prospects for communication and collaboration. Education is embracing these new technologies as they bring with them fresh opportunities for both teachers and learners. To use these technologies effectively requires an awareness of the benefits and risks, the development of new skills, and an understanding of their appropriate and effective use both in and outside of the classroom. This web site aims to highlight the safety issues and provide practical information and advice for schools on how to use the technologies safely. Two companion sites provide Internet safety information for parents and Internet safety information for UK Online centres

Follow these golden rules for a fun-filled, enjoyable and safe journey inside and outside the internet and our WKN galaxy .
The 10 Golden Rules on Internet Safety
    1. Ask your parents for permission before you log on!
Read the internet safety tips together with your parents, teacher or guardian.Let them know what you are up to on-line. Only use the Internet when your parents have given you permission, and only for the time they allowed you to use it.

    2. Tell your parents to spend time with you while online .
You might want to know some guidelines that your parents are concerned in the use of the computer such as time and the places to go in the World Wide Web. Show them your favorite places in the internet. Tell them about the people you meet on-line, and the things you talk about. Let them know of your keypals and their traditions. Get them involved in your on-line activities!

    3. Post your family's e-mail address even if you have your own!
It's neat to have your own e-mail address but it is always a good idea to post your family's address, and then inform your own address after you are absolutely sure that the sender is trustworthy.

PROGRAMS OVERVIEW ALLIANCE BANKSTREET IKE ... WORKFORCE PEOPLE OUR DIRECTOR STAFF From the experienced gained in four years of working with the use of the Internet in education CIESE has come to the realization that it is important to balance protecting students with the need to utilize the technology to its full potential. For these reasons, rather than advocating policies that completely restrict students and teachers in regards to the content of their web sites, we advocate the following:
Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) - These are basically "contracts" that outline how students can use the technology, what they cannot do with it and the consequences for violating the policy. These should include school web pages and the content that is allowed on them. AUPs should be signed by an authorized representative of the school, students and parents so that all concerned parties are aware of the policy. No Student Names - We recommend that when referring to students on a web page that either their names not be used or only their first names be posted. Some schools have found the use of "nicknames" to be an effective way of dealing with this issue.

Kids' Rules for Online Safety
I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.

WiredHelp Internet 101 Internet 101 What Is the Internet? Depending on which version you read about the beginning of the Internet, it began sometime in the 1950's or 1960's during the Cold War. The Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) devised a method by which computers could be linked together (networked) to enable different government "think tanks" and universities to exchange information even if "the bomb" were dropped on the United States. It was called ARPANET in those days. You can view the TimeLine and history of the Internet here Internet History Gradually more universities were given access, then businesses, and finally regular, everyday people like us were allowed to dial in to what is now called the Internet. When you watch an ice skater glide ever-so-gracefully across the ice performing turns and leaps, you know that it has taken many years of hard work and practice to make it look so simple. It is the same with computers. It has taken many programmers long years of coding, making mistakes, and rewriting before it became easy for us to use. A couple of protocols were developed to make access to the Internet a simple process for the average user. A protocol is simply a standard that all can understand, such as twelve inches to a foot, a skein of yarn, or a roll of paper towels.
