How to Choose
There have never been more opportunities or information sources available, but deciding which funds to buy has never been more difficult.
FOR INVESTORS LIKE like Mary Ann Williams, a novice taking her first shaky steps in the world of online investing, the breathtaking array of mutual fund choices can be confusing, even paralyzing. She turned to the Internet to help move forward, but even that can seem daunting until you find the resource that is right for you. "Whenever I look at sites like Sage, on America Online, that say they're geared toward the beginner mutual fund investor, I find that the wording gets too deep. There's just too much to absorb and too many choices. It makes my head swim," she said. A registered nurse and home health care worker, Ms. Williams spent hours online sifting through fund data and making various attempts to contact individuals and financial planners for advice through electronic message boards. She finally found what she needed on a Web site. "I found a list on one magazine's site that ranked funds by stars with four stars being their best recommendation," she said. "Since I'm a real novice, all the lingo, the jargon, means absolutely nothing to me. But the four stars I understand!" The opportunities have never been greater, but at the same time, deciding which mutual funds to buy has never been more difficult. The number of mutual funds available multiplied as a bull market for stocks stretched through most of the 1990s, and demand for funds grew. At the same time, fortunately, the Net emerged as a new tool for fund investors. Resources previously available only through a financial planner or broker are now available on any home PC. Just as with selecting a fund, investors must find the Internet tools that suit them best.

Ethical Investing
by Jon Entine
F or years, socially responsible investment funds have been hammered by critics for supposedly delivering below market returns. Articles such as "Doing Good but Not So Well" suggest that "sub-par" returns have been the norm. So "green" investors and the proliferating number of socially oriented investment advisors were heartened last year when the Parnassus Fund , one of the largest "ethical" funds, reported a five-year stellar return of 21.5 percent. This was a vindication of sorts for a segment of the investment industry that has long believed that ethics and profits need not be mutually exclusive. "We've been tracking social investments for years," says Peter Kinder, president of Boston-based KLD, which devised the Domini Social Index to measure performance of socially screened stocks. "It hasn't hurt investors to stay out of tobacco stocks or to load up on companies with good environmental or labor records. Just the opposite. Good business practices make good companies, not the other way around." Today, there are more than 40 mutual funds in the United States and another 12 in Canada that use some form of positive or negative screens. Together, they hold upward of $13 billion dollars; another $3 billion is invested in targeted social investments such as community development banks. Although social investing is a relative drop in the investment bucket?more than $8 trillion dollars is under management in North America?it has a high media profile and various types of social screens are gradually being adopted by many multi-billion dollar pension funds.

Capital Gains

Ready to buy mutual funds? Buying now may increase your taxes... A capital gain is when the fund manager sells a stock in the fund for a profit. The profit (gain) is distributed to the shareholders. The shareholders will have to pay taxes on the distribution on a certain date.

Calvert has been a leader in the Socially Responsible Investing field for more than two decades. Its growth offers a glimpse of where SRI is today and where it is headed. In the early 1980s, the company, already well established as a leader in fixed-income investing, branched out into equities and pioneered the use of social investing on a broader scale than ever before. In 1982, the Calvert Social Investment Fund TM (CSIF®) became the first mutual fund to oppose apartheid in South Africa. Fittingly, in 1994, following Nelson Mandela’s victory in the country’s first open elections, Calvert became one of the first mutual funds to re-invest in a free South Africa. Calvert has been in the mutual fund business for 25 years and manages approximately $8.5 billion in assets in 27 screened and non-screened portfolios for over 220,000 shareholders. It has become the leading provider of the broadest array of SRI mutual funds across equity, bond and money market portfolios. At the heart of Calvert’s success is a clear and compelling investment philosophy . Calvert recognizes that today’s social and economic issues have a way of becoming tomorrow’s economic problems. So, investing in companies that are committed to meeting the challenges of the future with
