The SEC Mutual Fund Cost Calculator:
A Tool for Comparing Mutual Funds
The Mutual Fund Cost Calculator enables investors to easily estimate and compare the costs of owning mutual funds. The Cost Calculator takes the mystery and math out of the cost equation, revealing how costs add up over time. Mutual fund costs take a big chunk out of any investor's return. That's why it's important for investors to know what costs they are paying, and which cost structure is best for them. By using the Cost Calculator investors will find answers quickly to questions like this: Which is better, a no-load fund with yearly expenses of 1.75% , or a fund with a front-end sales charge of 3.5% with yearly expenses of 0.90% ? The Cost Calculator is great for understanding costs, but costs aren't the only thing that should be considered when investing in a mutual fund. Other things to assess include:
  • the number of years needed to reach an investment goal, the type of stocks, bonds, or other securities that the fund buys, the risk of the fund

Mutual Fund Investing:
Look at More Than a Fund's Past Performance
You can't open a newspaper or read a magazine without seeing ads promoting the stellar performance of "hot" mutual funds. But past performance is not as important as you may think, especially the short-term performance of relatively new or small funds. As with any investment, a fund's past performance is no guarantee of its future success. Over the long-term, the success (or failure) of your investment in a fund also will depend on factors such as:
  • the fund's sales charges, fees, and expenses;
  • the taxes you may have to pay when you receive a distribution;
  • the age and size of the fund;
  • the fund's risks and volatility; and
  • recent changes in the fund's operations.
So, look at more than the fund's past performance when making your investment decisions. Read the fund's prospectus and shareholder reports, and consider these tips:
  • Scrutinize the fund's fees and expenses. SEC's Mutual Fund Cost Calculator to compute how the costs of different mutual funds add up over time and eat into your returns. Know how the fund impacts your tax bill.

How To Use IBD To Select The Best Mutual Funds
"Mutual funds are the best investment medium ever produced for many individual investors. They are easy to use and widely accessible." William J. O'Neil IBD Tip: Investing in mutual funds is much different than buying stocks. But you still need to evaluate your investments before you buy.
Patience Can Be Richly Rewarded
The reason is compounding. Compounding happens when your earnings themselves (the performance gains plus any dividends and reinvested capital) generate more earnings, allowing you to put ever-greater sums to work. And the more time that goes by, the more powerful compounding becomes. Say you invested $10,000 in a fund with moderate total returns of 10% a year:
  • After 10 years, you'd have $25,937;
  • after 20 years you'd have $67,275;
  • after 40 years, compounding really kicks in: You'd have $452,593.

Why Let Income Taxes Put a Drag on Your Retirement Savings? Annuities offer a wide array of tax-deferred portfolios with the potential to increase your pool of retirement assets and to help provide for your loved ones. Investing in variable annuities involves risks, including the possible loss of principal. But history is on your side. In the past 75 years, U.S. common stocks and corporate bonds have consistently outperformed government bonds and handily beaten the rate of inflation. While past performance is not a guarantee of future results, diversification and tax-deferred compounding give variable annuities the ability to increase your assets faster than inflation erodes them, and provide the money you will need for a more enjoyable retirement.
