Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from a paper in process by Ron Deiter, Professor of Economics, entitled "What's So Funny About Teaching 'Dismal' Science Classes?" Dr. Deiter will lead the discussion at the Faculty Forum on November 9. See the Announcements for more information about the Forum. The use of humor in our society has received widespread attention. Numerous experts, most notably outside of education, have espoused the use of humor in their fields for various physiological and psychological benefits that are believed to be associated with laughter and/or humor. Some of these physiological benefits include muscle relaxation, stimulated circulation, improved respiration, and exercise of the longs and chest muscles, increased production of the body's natural pain killers called endorphins, as well as lowered pulse rate and blood pressure. For those who don't like to exercise, laughter has even been suggested as a possible alternative (Berk 1998). Positive psychological effects of laughter include reduced anxiety and stress, greater self esteem, and increased self motivation (Berk 1998). Not coincidentally, perhaps, the use of humor has been recommended as a business management tool that promotes a productive work environment (Kushner 1990), as an effective health care tool (Clifford 1996), and as a possible tool to improve interpersonal relationships (Sidey 1994).

Return to DHS Home Iowa is the only state in the nation to be awarded both the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) grants. The Social Security Administration recently approved twelve states for cooperative agreements to conduct demonstration projects. The purpose was to develop integrated service delivery systems which increase employment of individuals with disabilities who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). At the same time the Rehabilitation Services Administration approved grants to five states with the purpose of assisting persons with disabilities who receive Family Investment Program (FIP) benefits to obtain employment. Both grants are 5 year projects in which the partnering agencies in Iowa will work together to design and implement processes to assist persons with disabilities obtain employment. Purpose of the Project: To assist Iowa in developing the infrastructure to enable coordination of service delivery systems which increase the rates of employment and self-sufficiency of Iowans with disabilities.

INSIDE IOWA STATE April 19, 2002 Technology toys make science fun for kids Photos by Bob Elbert. by Bridget Bailey, News Service intern A standing toolbox with numerous drawers sits in the middle of the room. The drawers are filled with LEGOs and robotic components that young students will use to construct computer-controlled, motorized cars. Tina Tran, a senior at Keokuk High School, and Heidi Rodgers, a sophomore at Newton High School, sit among the roomful of high school girls interested in pursuing science careers. They are participating in Toying with Technology (TWT), an Iowa State program that promotes science and engineering careers to K-12 students. "I think this program has helped me a lot," said Tran, who is participating in TWT for the third time. "It's helped me decide what kind of engineering I want to do. I want to work with this stuff." Tran, who plans to study engineering at Iowa State, is having trouble with the batteries in her car. A battery switch does the trick and the multi-colored car moves forward in response to Tran and Rodgers' programming code. Making science fun TWT was established in 1996 as a way to introduce students to science, engineering and technology. A hands-on laboratory in Howe Hall is filled with LEGO robots to aid in demonstrating technology and innovation to young students.
