    Reflecting Back
by Dr. Gaylord Tryon, SAI Executive Director
We were saddened this month to learn of the passing of Robert Fitzsimmons, a former SAI staff member. Fitz died of cancer in his hometown of Boone, Iowa, on Aug. 26, 2000, at the age of 75.
Fitz started his career in school administration as high school principal in Mexico, Mo. From there he moved to Cedar Rapids and served as principal at Washington High School from 1962-67. Fitz was appointed as principal of Kennedy High School when the building first opened in 1967. After leaving Cedar Rapids in 1970, Fitz went to work for NASSP as Director of Student Activities.
In 1972, Fitz was appointed executive director of the Iowa Association of Secondary School principals (succeeding Del Battrick). In 1983, the Iowa Association of Secondary School Principals merged with the Iowa Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals to form the Educational Administrators of Iowa (EAI). Fitz served as associate executive director of EAI from 1983-87. On Sept. 1, 1987, the Educational Administrators of Iowa (building principals) merged with the Iowa Association of School Administrators (superintendents) to form the School Administrators of Iowa. Fitz served as Coordinator of Professional Services for SAI from Sept. 1, 1987, until his retirement on June 30, 1991.

Iowa City School Board members should be wary of using a heavy hand with the Boy Scouts - or any other group. THE ISSUE:
    WE SUGGEST:
What board President Matt Goodlaxson is contemplating amounts to nothing more than crushing dissent and unpopular beliefs. Almost a year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Boy Scouts could ban gays as pack and troop leaders, Goodlaxson seems headed toward action that would ban scouts from Iowa City schools. The board and district administration are being pressured into action, because of a contentious 23-13 vote by the Longfellow Elementary PTA to recharter - continue to sponsor - the school's Cub Scout pack. Some PTA members were distressed by the Scouts' national policy, even though that might not work its way down to local troops and packs.

    What I Know Now
Be Cool. Chill Out. Refrigerate Promptly. F or decades, product sales have reigned as the fundraising method of choice for most small non-profit organizations. However, the choice of products available to the fundraising chairperson today has grown exponentially, reading like a What's What in consumer goods. In fundraising drives across the country, the ever-popular candy, magazines and wrapping paper are found alongside everything from non-perishable cheese and sausage to light bulbs, birdseed, fresh fruit, tee shirts and scads of gift items. Now refrigerated and frozen foods - from pizza and cheesecakes to cookie dough - are gaining popularity in the parade of products sold for fundraising purposes. These products bring with them a whole new set of distribution and handling considerations. As a fundraising decision-maker, your primary goal, of course, is to conduct a smooth, profitable fundraiser. But don't lose sight of the fact that the foods sold through a fundraising drive are still intended for people to eat and enjoy, safely. "There's a misperception that foods sold for fundraising purposes are indestructible," reports Jim Messina, a New Jersey-based supplier of frozen foods for the fundraising market. According to Messina and others in the business of manufacturing and distributing frozen cookie dough, cheesecakes, pizzas and other frozen food items, the parameters for preserving these increasingly popular fundraising items are no different from products purchased from the grocer. Tom Lundeen, another frozen food supplier based in Iowa agrees, "When you buy ice cream at the corner supermarket, you don't leave it in the trunk for two days."
