Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Known as Persia until 1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling shah was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces subsequently crushed westernizing liberal elements. Militant Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979 and held it until 20 January 1981. During 1980-88, Iran fought a bloody, indecisive war with Iraq over disputed territory. The key current issue is how rapidly the country should open up to the modernizing influences of the outside world. By Christine Foy for the Iran Project According to the 1996 census, the population is 61.3 million, approximately 60 percent of which live in cities. Over half of Iranians are under age 25.
The official site of the president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami. A brief description of Iran's government from the InfoPlease encyclopedia.
Government
By Christine Foy for the Iran Project Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi came to power in 1953 in a coup engineered by the CIA. He was praised in the West for his land reform and efforts to modernize Iran's industry and culture. But within Iran, he was seen as an increasingly brutal dictator. He instituted the SAVAK secret police in 1957 to oversee political activity and the work of the press, and in 1975 he decreed a one-party system. Mass demonstrations erupted in 1978, escalating until the Shah fled Tehran in January 1979. Iran was declared an Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution. Iranians voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to establish an Islamic constitution. Under that constitution, the legislation of the country is guided by the code of Islamic law. Although a president and parliament are elected, supreme authority belongs to religious leaders. Tensions still exist today over how much Western influence should be allowed. Iranians also disagree on how much power should reside with popularly elected politicians or with religious leaders.

IRAN's GEOGRAPHY With an area of 1,648,000 square kilometers, Iran ranks sixteenth in size among the countries of the world. Iran is about one-fifth the size of the continental United States, or slightly larger than the combined area of the contiguous states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Located in southwestern Asia, Iran shares its entire northern border with the Soviet Union. This border extends for more then 2,000 kilometers, including nearly 650 kilometers of water along the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. Iran's western borders are with Turkey in the north and Iraq in the south, terminating at the Shatt al Arab (which Iranians call the Arvand Rud). The Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman littorals form the entire 1,770-kilometer southern border. To the east lie Afghanistan on the north and Pakistan on the south. Iran's diagonal distance from Azarbaijan in the northwest to Baluchestan va Sistan in the southeast is approximately 2,333 kilometers. LANDSCAPE A series of massive, heavily eroded mountain ranges surround Iran's high interior basin. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high. In sharp contrast are the coastal regions outside the mountain ring. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea, never more than 70 miles wide and frequently narrowing to 10, falls sharply from the 10,000-foot summit to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

    Location
Iran is situated in south-western Asia and borders the three CIS states, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Turkmenistan, as well as the Caspian Seas to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south and Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.

Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

    The Geographical Setting
Iran is a huge country occupying 1.6m sq. km. Mercator's projection distorts our perception of the land, but, if it were superimposed on Europe it would spread from Sardinia to Budapest in a horizontal direction. Its northern reaches lie on the same latitude as Athens, while the southern ones fall on the edge of the Tropic of Cancer. It is six times the size of Britain and three times that of France. The humid climate round the Caspian sea supports rice and tea growing while much of the rest of the country is arid desert or steppe. Most of the country is high. Isfahan lies 1400 metres above sea level, Hamadan 1800 and Shiraz 1600. Tehran the capital is built on the side of a mountain, rising from 1200 to 1700 metres within its boundaries.

The Zayandeh river which runs through Isfahan is typical of these waterways which are born from the melting snows of the high peaks and die away in the desert before they can flow into the sea.
    The Geographical Setting
Two great mountain ranges separate this central plateau from the coastal areas, from which a few torrents pour into the seas below them, but the great cities of Iran are not built round permanent, navigable waterways as we know them in Europe.
