LUMPKIN / Associated Press Wednesday night the U.S. military struck with cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs against a site near Baghdad, where Iraqi leaders were thought to be, U.S. government officials said. There was no indication whether the attack was successful. Saddam last appeared on television Tuesday, wearing military fatigues for the first time in years. After that appearance, American officials said, he took steps to lower his profile in the city to an even greater degree than normal. Saddam, whom officials describe as obsessed with his personal security, keeps a network of bunkers and other hiding places in and around the capital. He moves between them frequently, surrounded by security forces. The U.S.-led war on Iraq could come to a fast end should he be killed, officials suggested. But U.S. officials and Iraq experts who have studied Saddam said he has continued to believe he will not only survive but prevail.

04:30 PM Dec. 18, 1998 PT While CNN and other broadcast journalists hunkered down on Baghdad rooftops to report this week's bombings, a Web-based news service gave its audience a more immediate, interactive window on the action just hours after it began. At approximately 9:00 p.m. EST Wednesday night, the Out There News service started feeding questions to Iraqi journalist Subhy Haddad, who was sitting in the press center building in Baghdad.

"It's entirely for an online audience, and you're getting a constant flow of feedback from the audience you're serving," said Eedle. "You get an instant sense of what people think of the story and what you're saying." As the building shook around him, Haddad used a satellite phone to talk to Eedle in his London office. Eedle, in turn, was relaying questions from a chat host located at one of AOL's US offices. The chat host screened questions as audience members typed them.

03:00 AM Jan. 12, 1999 PT Anyone remember a CNN correspondent named Wolf Blitzer reporting from the Pentagon in January 1991 that military officials were claiming credit for wiping out almost all of the 700-plane Iraqi air force? Robert Wiener, a CNN producer involved in covering Desert Storm, reminds us about the report in his book Live from Baghdad: "Wolf said all of Iraq's fixed Scud and ballistic missile sites were put out of commission and Baghdad's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons arsenal had been 'wiped out.'" Blitzer also pointed out that the Republican Guard had been "decimated." A little while later eight years or so reporters shoveled out the straight dope from military briefings describing new strikes against Iraq. American and British officials boasted of destroying nine Iraqi missile factories, putting them out of commission according to US General Henry Shelton for "at least a year." And hitting barracks, ministry offices, armed-forces command sites, air defense systems, and just all kinds of other big stuff.

Colin Powell, in his presentation to the UN Security Council, drew attention to "the fine paper that the United Kingdom distributed... which describes in exquisite detail Iraqi deception activities". Ten pages of that 19 pages report happen to be lifted from sources not referenced. Four pages are, to a large extent verbatim (including typographic errors), taken from a postgraduate student's publication in an internet-journal last September. Another six pages rely heavily on material published in Jane's Intelligence Review in 1997 and last November. Sources: ADVERTISEMENT

I know I can only rely on about 5 people to read this, but you definitely should, because it's well worth it. Incredibly, it appeared in the [notoriously left wing] Guardian.
    Roll footage:
    1) "It's all about oil!" Like hyperactive brats who get hold of one phrase and repeat it endlessly, this naive and prissy mantra is enough to drive to the point of madness any person who actually attempts to think beyond the clich©s. Like "Whatever!" it is one of the few ways in which the dull-minded think they can have the last word in any argument. So what if it is about oil, in part? Are you prepared to give up your car and central heating and go back to the Dark Ages? If not, don't be such a hypocrite. The fact is that this war is about freedom, justice - and oil. It's called multitasking. Get used to it!
    2) "But we sold him the weapons!" An incredible excuse for not fighting, this one - almost surreal in its logic. If the west sold him the weapons that helped make him the monstrous power that he is, responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of Iranians, Kurds, Kuwaitis and Iraqis, then surely it is our responsibility to redress our greed and ignorance by doing the lion's share in getting rid of him.
