War on terrorism
Iraq's gun culture stokes fears of unrest after Saddam's ouster By Matthew McAllester

Newsday DAVID GUTTENFELDER / AP An Iraqi kerosene vendor pours a container into his horse-drawn tank at a service station in Baghdad yesterday. Iraqis are stockpiling basic items as they begin to brace for a possible U.S.-led attack and the tumult that could follow it. E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive Although desperate to be rid of Saddam and his regime, middle-class Sunnis would rather keep him than see a theocratic Shiite government in Iraq, such as the one in neighboring Iran. "Better our Saddam than Iran," the ex-soldier said. The Iraqi government also is clearly anxious that there might be another uprising by the Shiites, who form about 60 percent of Iraq's population. A television channel run by Saddam's son, Uday, has been showing propagandistic footage of the 1991 violence for the past week to dissuade people from any similar rebellion should another war begin. Last week, the government ordered its troops into the streets for what it said was a drill to prepare for war. Some Iraqis said they thought the pickup trucks mounted with machine guns on street corners were primarily intended to intimidate the population.

History, culture, heritage of Iraq Prepared by: Jameel Nadeen Mesopotamia Literally, 'the land between the rivers'; the name in antiquity for the area between the Tigris and Euphrates. It was conventionally divided into two: Lower Mesopotamia, the home of the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations, stretched from the alluvial plain at the head of the Persian Gulf to Baghdad (C Iraq); Upper Mesopotamia, the home of the Assyrians, extended from Baghdad to the foothills of E Turkey. Historically, the former is more important: here the world's first urban civilization emerged during the fourth millennium BC. Babylon 32°33N 44°25E. From the 18th-c BC, the capital of the Babylonian Empire, situated on the R Euphrates S of Baghdad, modern Iraq. Its massive city walls and 'hanging gardens', attributed by classical tradition to Semiramis, wife of Shamshi-Adad V (823-811 BC) Semiramis: Semi-legendary Queen of Assyria, the wife of Ninus, with whom she is supposed to have founded Babylon. The historical germ of the story seems to be the three years' regency of Sammu-ramat (811-808 BC), widow of Shamshi-Adad V, but the details are legendary, derived from Ctesias and the Greek historians, with elements of the Astarte myth. Semi-subterranean vaulted rooms provided with hydraulic lifting gear in the later Palace of Nebuchadnezzar (604-562 BC) have been claimed as remains of the gardens, but their site is not definitely known.

By Kevin Filan Iraq Egypt Iraq Israel Lebanon ... Syria During the Middle Ages the Crusaders hoped that the armies of Prestor John, ruler of a mighty Christian empire, would come from the East and sweep the Moslem infidels from the Holy Land. Unfortunately, the Assyrian Christians ruled no such empire; rather, they were a beleagured minority within their own lands. Their situation has not improved today, as 1 million Iraqi Christians find themselves under the thumb of one of the world's most brutal dictatorships. The Assyrian Christians have frequently found themselves victimized by emperors professing various faiths, and still have maintained their culture and their religion despite all odds. In a region filled with bloody history, the history of the Assyrian Church is among the bloodiest … and the proudest.
Should the U.S. and Iraq go to war, the Assyrians have little to gain… and much to lose. Iraq is essentially an artificial entity, a Yugoslavia-like entity consisting of several linguistic, cultural and ethnic groups. The Shi'ite majority has long felt oppressed by the Sunnis who make up a disproportionate part of the Ba'ath Party… and the Kurds, who have long sought their own homeland, have now begun gravitating toward militant Islam. In a crisis, all these groups might unite in their hatred and mistrust of the Christian minority … and the end result could be yet another anti-Assyrian genocide.

02:00 AM Sep. 17, 2002 PT Journalist William Rivers Pitt wrote War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn't Want You to Know in just three days. Then he and his publisher, Beau Friedlander of Context Books, edited it in a mere eight hours. From concept to publication, the book took one month a fraction of the time it would have taken without the Internet. And on Thursday 125,000 copies will hit bookstores and spur what Friedlander hopes will become a serious debate.

The book's companion website is intended to feed that discourse and, ultimately, encourage Americans to oppose a war on Iraq, said Friedlander.

Infinitives as Nouns

Infinitives are the most basic verb form in Spanish, but they don't always function as verbs. Infinitives can also function as nouns, becoming either the subject or object of a sentence.
Various Meanings of
Ya
Ya
is one of those common colloquial words that doesn't always have a readily translatable meaning. While sometimes it means "now," it often is used simply to add emotional content or emphasis to sentences. More: Question of the Week - Find out what learners want to know.
