Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, Iraq became an independent kingdom in 1932. A "republic" was proclaimed in 1958, but in actuality a series of military strongmen have ruled the country since then, the latest being SADDAM Husayn. Territorial disputes with Iran led to an inconclusive and costly eight-year war (1980-1988). In August 1990 Iraq seized Kuwait, but was expelled by US-led, UN coalition forces during January-February 1991. The victors did not occupy Iraq, however, thus allowing the regime to stay in control. Following Kuwait's liberation, the UN Security Council (UNSC) required Iraq to scrap all weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and to allow UN verification inspections. UN trade sanctions remain in effect due to incomplete Iraqi compliance with relevant UNSC resolutions. Fourwinds10.com - News and Information - Iraq Back to News Back to Fourwinds from http://www.uruklink.net/iraqnews/eiqline.htm Iraq 30 Years of Progress Iraq: Land and People The Physical Elements Three primary factors must be known about Iraq before any physical, human or economic elements can be sorted and evaluated. Information about where Iraq is, how large it is, and what shape it has is essential at the beginning of such geographic study. Each plays a significant role in the geography of the country and the region as a whole. A. Location Iraq, in terms of latitude and longitude, lies between 29°15’N, and 38°15’N, 38°45 and 48°45 E. That means it is located entirely within the north temperate zone where it enjoys stimulus seasonality of climate. The country is bounded by several Arab and non-Arab States: Turkey on the north, Iran on the east, Syria and Jordan on the west and Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Arab Gulf on the south. Throughout history, Iraq’s inhabitants have entered into peaceful relations with their neighbours, and their civilization originally based on agriculture should gradually have given way to one in which trade had a major part. This is more true at the present time. With an immense agricultural and mineral wealth, there is no necessity or inducement not to assert the same historical relations. There is no need to speak about the brotherly ties that bind Iraq with the surrounding Arab states and its sincere efforts for Arab aspirations to become true.

    Iraq
Iraq GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION Boundaries The border with Iran has been a continuing source of conflict and was partially responsible for the outbreak in 1980 of the present war. The terms of a treaty negotiated in 1937 under British auspices provided that in one area of the Shatt al Arab the boundary would be at the low water mark on the Iranian side. Iran subsequently insisted that the 1937 treaty was imposed on it by "British imperialist pressures," and that the proper boundary throughout the Shatt was the thalweg. The matter came to a head in 1969 when Iraq, in effect, told the Iranian government that the Shatt was an integral part of Iraqi territory and that the waterway might be closed to Iranian shipping. Through Algerian mediation, Iran and Iraq agreed in March 1975 to normalize their relations, and three months later they signed a treaty known as the Algiers Accord. The document defined the common border all along the Shatt estuary as the thalweg. To compensate Iraq for the loss of what formerly had been regarded as its territory, pockets of territory along the mountain border in the central sector of its common boundary with Iran were assigned to it. Nonetheless, in September 1980 Iraq went to war with Iran, citing among other complaints the fact that Iran had not turned over to it the land specified in the Algiers Accord. This problem has subsequently proved to be a stumbling block to a negotiated settlement of the ongoing conflict.

11 percent cannot find the United States RELATED Global Geographic Literacy Survey Take the quiz WASHINGTON (AP) Young Americans may soon have to fight a war in Iraq, but most of them can't even find that country on a map, the National Geographic Society said Wednesday. The society survey found that only about one in seven 13 percent of Americans between the age of 18 and 24, the prime age for military warriors, could find Iraq. The score was the same for Iran, an Iraqi neighbor. Although the majority, 58 percent, of the young Americans surveyed knew that the Taliban and al Qaeda were based in Afghanistan, only 17 percent could find that country on a world map. A U.S.-led force attacked the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan in October 2001, and President Bush has said he is prepared to use force to rid Iraq of any chemical, nuclear or biological weapons programs.
