The Geography of the Island
The island of Ireland is situated in the extreme north-west of Europe between 51.5 and 55.5 degrees north latitude and between 5.5 and 10.5 degrees west longitude. The Irish Sea to the east, which separates Ireland from Britain, is from 17.6 to 192 km (11 to 120 miles) wide and has a maximum depth of about 200 metres (650 feet). Around the other coasts the shallow waters of the Continental Shelf are rather narrow and depths increase rapidly into the Atlantic Ocean. The Republic of Ireland covers 70,282 sq. km (27,136 sq.mi.) and consists of Munster, Leinster, Connacht and three counties of Ulster, making a total of 26 counties governed by The Republic. Northern Ireland is only 5,500 square miles in area - about the size of Yorkshire or Connecticut - and is made up of the remaining 6 counties of Ulster. The island comprises a large central lowland of limestone with a relief of hills surrounded by a discontinuous border of coastal mountains which vary greatly in geological structure. The mountain ridges of the south are composed of old red sandstone separated by limestone river valleys. Granite predominates in the mountains of Galway, Mayo and Donegal in the west and north-west and in Counties Down and Wicklow on the east coast, while a basalt plateau covers much of the north-east of the country. The central plain, which is broken in places by low hills, is extensively covered with glacial deposits of clay and sand. It has considerable areas of bog and numerous lakes. The island has seen at least two general glaciations and everywhere ice-smoothed rock, mountain lakes, glacial valleys and deposits of glacial sand, gravel and clay mark the passage of the ice.

Lecture 1 Political, Economic and Cultural Landscapes of Modern Ireland [For this lecture, refer esp. to: Aalen et al, 1997, Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape , esp. chaps. 1-3] Various cultural groups have had an impact on Ireland’s cultural geographies: The Gaelic-Irish : Mixed or ‘mongrel’ population of mostly ‘Celtic’ peoples (it is hugely debated whether these ‘native peoples’ were a collective group or not) who originated in Iberia (mixed with Norse) u Rural-based and organised the island into clan-controlled lordships u Roman Catholicism practised (since St. Patrick brought the faith in 432) but in an unorganised and ad hoc fashion u Gaelic-Irish customs such as partnership farming and the Brehon Law were practised – there was no ‘individualistic’ ownership. It was all clan- or kin-based u No unity – the nation of ‘Ireland’ did not exist and there was constant tribal warfare and localised disputes u One of the Gaelic-Irish chieftains in the south-east of the country (Diarmuid MacMurrough) invited the Anglo-Normans to settle one such localised dispute in Leinster in the 12th C The Norse (Vikings) – first raided Ireland in the late 8th C (793 A.D.)

The Geography of Ireland
Ireland consists of two separate countries, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is an independent nation. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The island is divided into the four ancient provinces of Connacht, Lenister, Munster and Ulster. It is further divided into 32 counties. The Republic of Ireland has 26 counties, while Northern Ireland has six counties. Connacht, to the West, has five counties. They are Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo (all in the Republic of Ireland). Munster to the Southwest has six counties. They are Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford (all in the Republic of Ireland). Ulster has nine counties, three in the Republic and six in Northern Ireland. Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan (in the Republic of Ireland). Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone (in Northern Ireland).

Geography Another striking feature of Ireland's geography is the extent of peat bog - which covers nearly a fifth of the entire country. These bogs often present very dramatic landscapes, with strangely shaped trees standing amongst multi-toned patterns of brown and purple. The turf, a legacy of the rapid warming of the country following the last Ice Age, is still widely worked. The lack of forest cover in Ireland is also immediately noticeable. Although Ireland's sparse woodlands cover just 6% of the land compared to Germany, for example, where forest cover is nearly 25%, primeval forests can still be found, consisting of ancient oak and the great Scots Pine. Most forests are more recent, mainly of Sitka spruce.

(INTERESTED IN FREE IRISH HERALDRY? OR FREE CELTIC CLIPART? LINK HERE TO A GREAT SITE!) In compiling these crosswords I have tried to give something of the flavour of Ireland, in its history, geography, literature, and everyday culture, in a slightly cryptic way. The level of difficulty is pitched somewhere between the trivial simplicity of "Simplex" and the obscurity of "Crosaire".
(Those of you who read the "Irish Times" will know what I mean.) :-)
A good map and/or a gazeteer of Ireland will be a great help to those unfortunate in not actually living here, in the finest country in the world! Enjoy this tour of Ireland in Crosswords;- if you have half as much fun in doing them as I did in compiling them, then my labour will have been worthwhile. **IF YOU WISH TO PUBLISH ANY OR ALL OF THESE CROSSWORDS
