Very well written. It is the clearest, friendliest book I have come across yet for explaining Python, and putting it in a wider context. It does not presume a large amount of other experience. It may be too slow for more advanced people, but it does go into some important Python topics carefully and in depth. Unlike too many beginner books, it never condescends or tortures the reader with childish hide-and-seek prose games. Not too many in-depth realworld examples in the book [hopefully he will do a followup volume], it sticks to gaining a solid grasp of Python syntax and structure.

This page collects my personal links in the field of Programming Languages . At first, it was devoted to functional programming . Now, I am very interested in the expressiveness of programming languages in general. With the term advanced I mean that it is oriented to researchers on programming languages I would like to add a personal comment to each link, but sometimes, I prefer to leave it blank than to include a meaningless comment. Of course, this page will always be under construction. You can contact me ( labra@lsi.uniovi.es ) for any comment or suggestion.

    Voyage 400 Leaked
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2003, 03:57 GMT Update:
Please note that this was a joke . Please do not contact Texas Instruments or any of their resellers asking about this product - it does not exist.
TI is developing a new calculator, the Voyage 400. Leaked specifications and photos from TI have been floating around since Saturday. It appears to follow the tacky case colors of the existing calculators, but what really matters is that it has a 256-color LCD! It also features a 66 MHz ARM processor (presumably with 68k emulation?), 16 MB of flash, and an IR port with a "teacher select" to disable for testing. The scheduled release date is in August. Unfortunately I don't think there is sound, but this definitely is a nerd's dream. Update( Henrik New information received from an anonymous source indicates that there is no sound output, but there is a link port that could possibly emulate sound output, like we have seen on other calcs. Further, there is an emulation layer so that Flash applications compiled for the Voyage 200 will be able to run unmodified. We will disclose further information as we get it.

    The Duke Internet Programming Contest
Duke has sponsored a programming contest that takes place in real-time over the internet. The contest has been held each year since 1990. It is open to anyone , there are divisions for novice programmers, undergraduates (not necessarily novices), and an open division. The contest problems from all previous contests are available via anonymous ftp. A paper The Internet Programming Contest: A Report and Philosophy that appeared in SIGCSE '93 is also available. The founders of the contest are (in alphabetical order) Owen Astrachan Vivek Khera Dave Kotz , and Lars Nyland
Four problems from previous contests converted to HTML. These show the uniformity with which problems are presented.
    The 200X Duke IPC Contest
Maybe there will be a contest soon. Maybe not. See below.
The 1994/5/6 Duke Internet Programming Contest
Well, that's now way out of date. For archival purposes, here's the text about that contest. Due to several mitigating circumstances, the 1994 internet programming will not be held. We're sorry for the late notice, but several circumstances have forced us to cancel, rather than deal with IPC-9X. Due to more circumstances we didn't hold a contest in 1995. We have plans to hold a contest in 1996, but don't hold your breath. However, please stay tuned. When a specific date is determined, notice will be placed here. Keep practicing...

I was a Ph.D. student at Stanford University studying programming languages. (I graduated in 2002.) My thesis work was about Obstacl, an object extension to Standard ML. I also worked on a web proxy server that alters Java applets to make them more safe. Since I have Java applets turned off in my browser, I decided to add some features to this proxy that would be more useful to me: filtering banner advertisements, reporting and blocking cookies, mangling URL redirects, spotting web bugs, removing pop-up windows, and generally reformatting web pages so that I can read them better). Richard Gabriel
Richard Gabriel is a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems, where he researches the architecture, design, and implementation of very large systems, as well as development techniques for building them. He is the author of three books: Writers' Workshops and the Work of Making Things Patterns of Software , and Performance and Evaluation of Lisp Systems . He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford in 1981 and returned to school to get a Master's in Fine Arts in poetry in 1998 at Warren Wilson College. In addition, he has in the works a program that would offer an MFA in software design. We recently caught up with him to trace the connections between creativity, software, and poetry. You have advocated a program that offers a Master of Fine Arts in software, similar to programs that offer MFAs in creative writing. You say, "Traditions of computer science and software engineering have tried to turn all aspects of software creation into a pure engineering discipline, when they clearly are not. The MFA in software would begin to repair this error." Tell us about the philosophy behind this proposal. Writing software should be treated as a creative activity. Just think about it the software that's interesting to make is software that hasn't been made before. Most other engineering disciplines are about building things that
