JEWISH GENES
DNA Evidence for Common Jewish Origin and Maintenance of the Ancestral Genetic Profile
By Rabbi Yaakov Kleiman
(Use with permission only) Recently published research in the field of molecular genetics – the study of DNA sequences – indicates that Jewish populations of the various Diaspora communities have retained their genetic identity throughout the exile. Despite large geographic distances between the communities and the passage of thousands of years, far removed Jewish communities share a similar genetic profile. This research confirms the common ancestry and common geographical origin of world Jewry. Jewish men from communities which developed in the Near East – Iran / Iraq, Kurds, Yemenites, Roman Jews, and Ashkenazim / European Jews – have very similar, almost identical genetic profiles. "Despite their long-term residence in different countries and isolation from one another, most Jewish populations were not significantly different from one another at the genetic level. The results support the hypothesis that the paternal gene pools of Jewish communities from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East descended from a common Middle Eastern ancestral population, and suggest that most Jewish communities have remained relatively isolated from neighboring non-Jewish communities during and after the Diaspora." (M.F. Hammer, Proc. Nat'l Academy of Science, June 9, 2000)

STEPHEN'S DEFENSE AND THE WORLD MISSION OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD(1)
J. Julius Scott, Jr.
Much has been said about Stephen and his bold defense.(2) I propose to focus attention upon three features of the Stephen-history that I believe had much to do with the changed in attitudes and actions by both the first Christians and their Jewish countrymen. These involve Stephen's cultural background, his view of the scope of God's presence and activities, and his understanding of the person and work of Jesus.
I. STEPHEN, THE HELLENISTIC JEW
The murmuring over the support of hellenistic widows (Acts 6:1) was probably a relatively insignificant incident that exposed latent tensions within the early Church. The potential for this and other problems between Jewish Christian groups (later parties)(7) lay, at least partially, in the cultural divisions of the Judaism from which they had come. The emergence of this distinctively hellenistic Jewish influence within Christianity suggests the existence of a form of the new faith that viewed Jewish institutions, customs and traditions differently than did the Hebraic Christians. As a result of their distinct outlook and emphases, Stephen and the Christian Jewish hellenists with him seem to have forced both the Jewish leaders and the early Christians themselves to reassess the nature and ultimate mission of the Christian community.

DNA and the Chain Of Tradition by R. Yaakov Kleiman Introduction The field of genetics is experiencing a knowledge explosion. The Human Genome Project of the United States Government is analyzing and mapping the entire DNA of mankind. With this new information comes consequences. Improvement in health, longer life, gene-engineered food, genetic screening, and much more, are all areas of new power and concern requiring wisdom and guidance from our sages. On Monday, June 26 23 Sivan, the U.S. and British governments, as well as a private corporation, announced that it had basically mapped the human genetic information. What this means technically we will explain in more detail below, because it is necessary in order to understand what we have to report. But the achievement of reading the human genetic code holds promise and power for important new achievements. We wish to stress that this research does not appear to have any halachic consequences whatsoever, but the results are a tremendous

Author's Note: I decided to create this page when a Primary School teacher (K-3) e-mailed me three days ago for help in finding stories that would get her young students interested in literature and myth. In the eleven months since Myth*ingLinks went online, I have received similar requests but, until now, never considered gathering the material I have onto one webpage. This page will grow slowly because my primary focus remains in collecting links for my own graduate students (average age: 47). But children, above all, need to be given access to stories that don't continue to transmit Western culture's often toxic agenda stories that, instead, show them creative pathways into realms of wonder, magic, and hope. Beginning this page is my small attempt to help in this task.

Biblical vs. Jewish Calendar
The Bible’s Holy Days are central to True Worship. But determining when to observe them creates an unending controversy—one that has been ongoing for 2,000 years. The question is, can we trust the Jewish, or Hebrew, calendar as some do? Is it the calendar Yahweh commanded for man? Or has its many changes down through history rendered it most unreliable? Here are the facts regarding the Jewish calendar, as well as the true Scriptural calendar given by our Creator. Some of the most visible personalities in history are those who make predictions about the future. From Nostradamus to modern “prophets” like Jean Dixon, human beings have always had a fascination with what is to come. The year 2000 is especially intriguing to many with an interest in the end times. But the greatest prophetic treasure virtually ignored in churchianity—and the key to true and accurate prophecy—lies in the days Yahweh commanded to be observed from the beginning. The Bible tells us that the holy days, Sabbaths, and the new moons “are a shadow of things to come,” Colossians 2:16-17. Notice that this New Testament passage says they ARE, not WERE, a shadow.

Eastern European Archival Database Launched
The Home Page says "Welcome" in big letters, and the latest accomplishment of the Routes to Roots Foundation is, indeed, a big welcome to Jewish genealogy. RTRF, that is Miriam Weiner, has placed the complete Jewish holdings of the State Archives of Belarus, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland and Ukraine in a common searchable database. It is the result of years of effort on the part of Ms. Weiner who worked closely with the head archivists of the five countries.
Because of the political upheavals in the past century, records are scattered for many towns and cities. The consolidated inventory brings them all under one umbrella. As an example, using the RTRF database, I was able to determine that the Jewish records of Volkovysk (now in Belarus), where my maternal grandfather was born, are in three different countries (Poland, Russia and Belarus) and five different archives.
An excellent feature of the Web design is that each page that details a specific record group has a link to another page that provides the address of the archives containing the records. There are Daitch-Mokotoff-Soundex and Starts-With options for those users who are uncertain how to spell the town name. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all genealogy-related websites were designed by genealogists, rather than government employees or (even worse) web designers?

Where do you draw the line? When do you throw in the towel? At what point do you throw your hands in the air and say, “enough is enough.” There is probably not one person reading this article, who has not contemplated giving up on something at one time, or another in their lives. The pace at which our lives move is accelerating at an incredible rate and it is easy to become completely overwhelmed by our day-to-day responsibilities and commitments. However, as God’s people, there must not be any “quit” in any of us. God wants, desires, and requires a “can do” people, now and in the future, when His kingdom is reestablished on this earth. Romans 12:1 , “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

PLEASE PRAY FOR LITTLE LIEL GRANOVSKY This month was very difficult for us. We are going through some tests with Liel and we do not have any diagnose yet. Our big concern about Liel is her difficulty to communicate and to socialize. She lives in her own world, which seems to be happy, she is always content. Doctors disagree on the problem. Please pray that we will have wisdom, and for our faith to trust Him.

DO YOU HAVE A SAFETY ROOM IN YOUR BASEMENT? "Yesterday, we finally got around to preparing our safety room with supplies, in the remote possibility we’ll need to take cover in it. It is a small airtight room made of fortified cement with a thick metal door and window. We estimate that when all 5 of us are sealed in, we will have about 4 hours of oxygen available. I guess that this is enough." (The Goldbergs)
