Reprinting Western Anti-Semitic Tracts Anti-Semitic/Anti-Jewish Literature with Islamic Roots Literature Based on Mixed Sources ... Introduction The Muslim world is witnessing an unprecedented wealth of literuature with anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli arguments based on Muslim thought and the Koran This extremist literature argues that the Jews, who in the past were the greatest enemies of Prophet Muhammad, have resumed their role and are today the greatest enemies of modern Islam. They indeed believe that, just as the defeat and slaughter of the Jews of the Arab world by Prophet Muhammad helped promote the rise of Islam and its conquests, the annihilation of Israel will bring into being the new Golden Era of contemporary Islam. (14) Egypt: Booklets for children with anti-Semitic illustrations The Wars of the Prophet: the War against Bani Qainuqa The Bani Qainuqa was a Jewish tribe that dwelt in the town of Medina (in the Arabian Peninsula) and was expelled by Muhammad. The wars led by Muhammad against the Jews of Medina ended in their defeat and destruction.

of research. This field focuses on a narrative series of themes recurringin the course of jewish literature throughout the ages.
http://www.biu.ac.il/js/thematology/progif1.html
The thematology of the literature of the Jewish people is a relatively new line of research. This field focuses on a narrative series of themes recurring in the course of Jewish literature throughout the ages. The period here covers the post-Biblical era up to the era of modern Hebrew literature.
In the field of comparative literature, scholars have traditionally concentrated on versions of various narratives relating to one general theme. However, in this project, the researchers employ a method known as a chain of variants relating to one and the same narrative, in other words, a homogenous theme.
To understand the extent of identity and change in the entire chain of variants belonging to a given series, the research team established the fbilowing four concepts.
  • The level of the material ( motif
  • The functional level ( motifeme
  • The structural level ( constant
  • The level of the ideological message ( telos
The research here involves an investigation of the thematic materials in Jewish literature in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-German, and Judeo-Arabic. The research seeks to cover the literary sequence of each theme, both historically and geographically. The work will gather, classify, and examine a wide range of narrative versions that were widespread among the Jews living in diverse communities. Some of these versions were initially created in different communities, whereas others originated elsewhere. Those versions that originated elsewhere were later modified and assumed a unique character in response to tile ever-changing influence of the surrounding environment.

Today it goes under names such as apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, Josephus and Philo, apocalyptic literature and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Mishnah and targums. But line by line, scroll by scroll, it represents the history and theology, the hopes and prayers of a living and diverse Judaism. It is an engrossing subject in and of itself, but for students of the New Testament it offers an invaluable context for understanding the words and actions of Jesus as well as the conversion and thinking of Paul. Exploring Jewish Literature of the Second Temple Period is an introduction to this literature that places it within its historical context. Riding the explosive growth of knowledge of this period, Larry Helyer guides students to the heart of the matter. What were the pressures and realities, the questions and dreams that nurtured and provoked these written expressions? And how does this literature throw light on the text of the New Testament and origins of Christianity?

April 1998 in Baltimore. AMERICAN JEWISH LITERATURE. Topic: Fact,
Fiction, and Drama: The Uses of History in American Jewish Literature.
The unique sensibilities of individual authors have transformed the
American Jewish historical experience into a body of literature that is
read world wide. This panel is a search for the historical impetus, the
included and excluded details, the transformation of facts into a mythic
narrative. An offshoot of the New Historicism, it rethinks the ways in
which the text is situated within the larger spectrum of discourses and
practices. It reconsiders the way human agents interact with social and linguistic systems.

    Best modern Jewish literature
Monday, October 21, 2002 In addition to rescuing and preserving works in Yiddish, the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst has just completed a two-year project designed to spark interest in modern Jewish literature. Working with an international panel of judges, the center has developed a list of "The 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature." The roster, whittled from 600 nominated titles, includes novels, plays, poetry and memoirs written over the last 150 years in several languages. "The need for the program arose out of our conviction that American Jews have failed to embrace modern Jewish writing," said the center's founder, Aaron Lansky, in a news release. "Our goal is to carry the Jewish story forward, from the Torah, Talmud and other traditional texts to the Jewish literature of our own time." Works nominated for intrinsic literary merit, Jewish authorship and treatment of Jewish experience or sensibility were then evaluated for quality of writing, depth of ideas and place in the Jewish canon.

    http://www.indiana.edu/~deanfac/blfal02/rel/rel_r445_3983.html
Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, one of the most important leaders of a Hasidic sect in the beginning of the 19th century, told 13 stories between 1806 and the year he died, 1811. Rabbi Nachman was a mystic and believed in his own messianic mission, which he expressed both in his homiletic writings and in the stories. These narratives were discussed by many scholars in the last hundred years, and conflicting interpretations have been suggested to their enigmatic aspects. The course will include detailed analysis of several of these stories, comparing them to their kabbalistic origins, and using them as a meaningful example to the exploration of the relationship between literary creativity and mystical experiences. They will be compared to other literary works by Jewish, Christian, and Islamic mystics in an attempt to outline the characteristics of this universal religious phenomenon.
