100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature - Yiddish Book Center
December 10, 2001 - National Yiddish Book Center Announces 'The 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature' The National Yiddish Book Center announced today its list of "The 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature," an initiative to identify and promote the most notable Jewish writing of the past one hundred and fifty years. The list of books includes Jewish literature in all languages and will serve as a "re-definition of the Jewish canon," according to Book Center founder and president Aaron Lansky. "With this list," says Lansky, "we can begin to enrich Jewish education and Jewish creativity at every level." The books were selected by a distinguished international panel of judges assembled by the Center, including Glenda Abramson of Oxford University; Robert Alter of the University of California at Berkeley; Hillel Halkin of Zichron Ya-akov, Israel; Gerson Shaked of Hebrew University in Jerusalem; Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times; Ilan Stavans of Amherst College; and Ruth Wisse of Harvard University. "The need for the program arose out of our conviction that American Jews have failed to embrace modern Jewish writing the tens of thousands of novels, stories, plays, poetry and memoirs that have chronicled the transformation of Jewish life, from the old world to the new," Lansky explains. "Our goal is to carry the Jewish story forward from the Torah, Talmud and other traditional texts to the Jewish literature of our own time."

Summer reading program promotes Jewish literature
NEW YORK (JTA) The new National Children's Jewish Literacy Campaign has launched its first official activity: a summer reading program. The twist is that the books must be Jewish, but not the kids The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles initiated the nationwide program, aimed at children in preschool through sixth grade. The Jewish literacy campaign was begun in Los Angeles with a national advisory board. "We can exchange between different cultural centers," said Abigail Yasgur, a librarian and director of the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles. She anticipates developing relationships with Japanese, African American, Filipino and Korean community centers in California and elsewhere. "You start to read my literature, I'll start to read your literature," Yasgur said. "You start to understand my culture because you read my literature, and I'll start to understand your culture because I read your literature." The program requires children to read six books "of Jewish content" at an age-appropriate level before the end of September. After filling out a form, participants receive a certificate and a prize. The form is available online at www.jclla.org.

The Rise of David Levinsky Considered to be the first great immigrant novel. Cahan was the editor of the socialist Yiddish daily, Forverts (The Jewish Daily Forward) for decadesit was he who institutde the "Bintel Brief" column collected in MEtzker's book (below). Strongly influenced by the Russian masters Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, and by English realists like Charles Dickens, Cahan tells the tale of an immigrant and willing assimilationist who finds himself, after achieving success in the American business world, strangely empty. Like a number of immigrant novels described in this bibliography, Cahan's commitment to social realism makes his work a valuable source for insight into ways in which immigrants perceived their situationalthough it has to be remembered that this is still a work of fiction, and its aims were at least partly propagandistic.
