Diaspora literature has become more prominent over the past two decades. This course will examine a variety of these literary expressions in the modern period. Themes to be explored include the effect of modernization, the loss of traditional norms, how immigrants adjusted to their new homelands and the impact of antisemitism, including the Holocaust. Some of the texts were originally written in English; others were translated from Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, French, German and Italian. The cosmopolitan scope of Jewish literature in the modern period will be a major topic of class discussions.

Bernard Cooperman speaks to juniors in the Beit Midrash about his most recent book, on Nov. 15. The Upper School held book week in honor of Cheshvan, the Jewish Book Month. The idea for Book Week, which took place from Nov. 12 to 16 and celebrated literature in the Jewish community, was introduced this past summer, when the Judaic Studies Departments met for their summer meeting a month before school started, according to librarian Michlean Amir. “We are the people of the Book and we all know that we love books. So it was decided that we should do something to celebrate books in our school,” said Amir. A book fair was held in the Upper School main hallway for parents and guests to buy books selected by each department, on Nov. 12. The fair was intended to enrich the curricula of the departments involved. Another aspect of Book Week included lectures from guest speakers. Author Anthony Pitch came to speak to the freshman and sophomores about his book, The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion, on Nov. 14. Pitch described details of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and urged students to delve into the lives of historical figures.

    Magic Bibliographies and Resources

These bibliographies so far contain only a few works which I have consulted for my PhD research into ancient Greek perceptions of magic. The content inevitably reflects my interests (particularly archaic and classical Greek literary sources). A comprehensive bibliography of magic (even ancient magic) would in any case be prohibitive. Feel free to suggest additions, etc. Please let me know if you find this of any use. In case you have found this page while looking for something else, I have included links to other online magic resources. You are visitor number to my site since its conception in 1996. This whole site will soon be restructured to make it simpler, more attractive and hopefully more useful (and so it will involve less work to keep it updated). The current change of face of this page is the first step. The bibliographies are currently still in their unwieldy form, as listed below. There is a Text-Only Version of the full bibliography in a single document; this is more up-to-date than any of the subdivided bibliographies. The following sub-sections, divided into topics for for convenience, remain accessible but are no longer updated pending the restructure of the site (which will happen when I have more time):

Ladino - a language destined to be lost?
"THE RACE IS ON to save the treasures of Ladino." This is the way Avner Peretz, Director of the Institute of Ladino in the Jerusalem suburb of Maale Adumim described his efforts to record the the Sephardic equivalent of Yiddish before much of it vanishes. In this spirit Peretz, a sixth generation Jerusalemite of Turkish background, has been collecting books, newspapers, and manuscripts. And he has not stopped there. He has also made a concerted effort to document the Ladino oral tradition. When the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, they took their language with them. In the Balkans and Turkey it was called Ladino, a corruption of the word "Latin" used to distinguish it from Turkish. In Tangier and Tetuan in Spanish Morocco it was called "Haquitiya." The classic of Ladino Literature is clearly Me-am Lo'ez , a monumental work of biblical commentary and talmudic tradition written in systematic form for the layman. In 1730 Rabbi Yaakov Culi published the initial volume, the first part of Exodus, in Constantinople; it was not until more than a century and a half later and more than a half dozen authors that the opus was finally completed. Today Me-am Lo-ez is a popular set in Hebrew, and it is making inroads into the market of English-speaking Jews, where it has appeared as

My name is Dennis Misler I started as a result of my experiences in the early 90’s traveling through Poland and the former Soviet Union "in search of my Jewish roots." I discovered a lot. Very significant to me was the wonderful art I saw being produced about Jewish life, past and present. The best of it plays an important role in keeping memories alive and in fostering the few small, but significant, efforts to create new Jewish communities there. in part reflects my desire to support those efforts by making some of that art available in the US.
