Most of my research involves Poland, Belorus/Russia, NY, MA, and CT, so I'm putting this page together to save time in looking for the links. I am an amateur genealogist. This is a hobby. While researching my family, I've come across these links. Hopefully, they will be helpful to you. If you require the services of a professional genealogist, though, please check in the soc.genealogy.* newsgroups. I'm still relatively (pun partially intended) new at this myself.

"This collection is extremely important to people whose Russian ancestors came to the U.S. in the 19th century," states Gary Mokotoff, leading expert on Jewish immigration. Search passenger list information for approximately 430,000 individuals, largely those of Jewish heritage. This is the only electronic index for passenger arrivals from Russia prior to 1896. Now researchers have an "excellent chance" of finding their ancestors' passenger arrival information, says Mokotoff. Produced alongside the Balch Institute, the information you can obtain from this data set can help you create a well-rounded picture of your ancestor's arrival in America.

"This collection is extremely important to people whose Russian ancestors came to the U.S. in the 19th century," states Gary Mokotoff, leading expert on Jewish immigration.
Parts of this data have been published in book form by the Genealogical Publishing Company. Prior to those volumes, no indexes existed for passenger arrivals from Russia prior to 1896. Researchers had no clear way to find out when or where their ancestors had arrived in the U.S. The information spanning 1892-1896 is also critical, as this was the start of a period of heavy Russian immigration.
Now passenger list information for approximately 430,000 individuals from Russia, largely those of Jewish heritage, is available here for efficient searching. These passengers arrived largely through New York, but some also arrived through ports like Boston, Baltimore, and New Orleans. With the publication of this collection, researchers have an "excellent chance" of finding their ancestors' passenger arrival information, says Mokotoff.

by Dena Eben Printer-friendly version Spotlight on Jewish Roots Expert Dena Eben shows you how to begin searching for and documenting your Jewish roots. Learn some of the specific advantages and difficulties, and techniques for following leads when traditional records don't suffice. Got mishpucha? Jewish family extends beyond religion, encompassing a cultural heritage worth discovering. Here's how to stop futzing and start finding your Jewish roots. Jewish genealogy is about discovering culture, not necessarily religion, although it helps if you have a small amount of basic theological knowledge. When you delve into a rich and well-documented 5,761-year history, sometimes the line between culture and religion blurs. A working knowledge of key terms, such as shtetl (small Jewish community in Eastern Europe), ketubah (marriage contract) or get (divorce contract), may be invaluable to your research. For many eager researchers, it is the gradual assimilation into American life that sparks their interest in reclaiming a Jewish heritage.
    In the Beginning
Vera Weizmann, wife of Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann, once noted, "We Jews are a strange people: We remember Moses, the Kings David and Solomon, but we know next to nothing about our own forefathers besides our parents and occasionally our grandparents."

Russians to America Pre-1820 Approximately 650,000 individuals of all nationalities arrived in America before 1820. Most were English and Welsh. Smaller numbers of German, Irish, Scotch-Irish, Dutch, French, Spanish, African, and other nationalities also arrived. These immigrants tended to settle in the eastern, middle-Atlantic, and southern states. Before January 1, 1820, the U.S. Federal Government did not require captains or masters of vessels to present a passenger list to U.S. officials. The lists that remain for the period before 1820 are varied in content. They range from name only lists to giving the person's full name, age, and country of origin.
