The Treasury Building served as the location of the temporary White House in 1865 when Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The presidential association, coupled with historic documentation for furnishing the rooms, makes the Andrew Johnson Suite one of the most significant spaces in the Treasury Building The assassination of Lincoln came at a critical time in our country's history, just one week after the surrender of the Confederate Army. The President's plans to reunite the country were interrupted on April 14 , 1865 when John Wilkes Booth fired a fatal shot at Lincoln. The following morning Lincoln died, making his vice-president, Andrew Johnson, the seventeenth president of the United States. As a courtesy to Mary Todd Lincoln, Johnson delayed moving into the White House, allowing Mrs. Lincoln time to recover and plan her departure. In the meantime

Death of Andrew Johnson It is an old favorite among trivia question writers. "Who was the only former American president to serve in the United States Senate?" The answer is identical to that for another popular civics question: "Who was the first president to be impeached in the House and tried by the Senate?" On July 31, 1875, Senator Andrew Johnson died of a stroke while visiting his daughter in Tennessee. The Tennessee Democrat had first served in the Senate from 1857 to 1862. In the early months of the Civil War, Johnson the only southern senator to remain loyal to the Union after his state seceded was obliged to flee his own state to avoid arrest. When federal troops conquered Nashville, he resigned his Senate seat in March 1862 to accept President Abraham Lincoln's appointment as military governor of Tennessee. He served as vice president for a month in 1865, and as president for the balance of Lincoln's term, until March 4, 1869. In January 1875, Johnson won back his former Senate seat after a hotly contested struggle that forced the Tennessee legislature through fifty-six separate ballots. On March 5, 1875, Johnson took his Senate oath before the same body that only seven years earlier had failed by a single vote to remove him from the presidency. During the nineteen-day Senate special session, he delivered one major address on political turmoil in Louisiana and then returned to Tennessee, where he died four months later. In later years and without much enthusiasm, the Senate periodically considered proposals permitting former presidents to attend Senate sessions, either as at-large members or in some advisory capacity. Finally, in 1963 the Senate adopted Senator Claiborne Pell's amendment to Rule XIX allowing former presidents to address the Senate "upon formal written notice to the Presiding Officer." Although several ex-presidents have stopped by to say hello, none has yet chosen to make a formal address.

If you looked only at Andrew Johnson's childhood, you would never guess that he would rise to the highest office of the United States. The 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on December 29, 1808. His father died when he was young, leaving the family in poverty. From ages 10 to 17, young Johnson worked as an apprentice to a tailor. He worked at that trade for a number of years, during which time he moved with his mother to Greenville, Tennessee. Johnson never attended school. Once married, however, his wife, Eliza McCardle, became his tutor, providing him with a good common education.

    The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
Only one president in U.S. history has been impeached by the House of Representatives: Andrew Johnson in 1868. At his trial in the Senate, Johnson escaped conviction by a single vote. In the election of 1864, Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, chose Senator Andrew Johnson, a Tennessee Democrat, as his vice-presidential running mate. Lincoln believed that Johnson, the only senator from a rebel state to remain loyal to the Union, would help persuade Democrats to vote Republican. After Lincoln was assassinated, Andrew Johnson took the oath of office on April 15, 1865. Two profound questions faced the nation. First, under what conditions should the Southern rebel states be readmitted into the Union? Second, what rights should the freedmen, or ex-slaves, have? A little over a month after becoming president, Johnson began executing his plan for reconstructing the South. Johnson pardoned all rebels except Confederate leaders. He also restored all rebel property except for slaves. Finally, he authorized each rebel state to call a convention of white delegates to draw up a new constitution. Once completed, a new state government could then be formed, and the state could apply for readmission to the Union.

Prewar Political Career. Johnson was popular with the small craftsmen of the town, and in 1829 he was elected councilman and later mayor of Greeneville; in 1835 he was sent to the state general assembly. Defeated in 1837, he was reelected in 1839. In the following year he actively campaigned for the Democratic party. He was elected to the state senate in 1841 and two years later to the U.S. House of Representatives, in which he served until 1853. In Congress, Johnson was known for his advocacy of cheap western land for homesteaders and support for the Mexican War. Twice elected (1853 and 1855) governor of Tennessee, in 1857 he was elevated to the U.S. Senate and again took up the fight for a homestead bill. The measure passed in 1860 but was vetoed by President James Buchanan

Though the Democrats had favored Johnson's policy, he had forfeited claims to leadership by deserting the party at the opening of the war, and he was not renominated, being succeeded by General Ulysses S. Grant. Johnson's last official act was to proclaim pardon to all who had been concerned in secession. He immediately began a campaign for the Senate and was elected in 1875, but died on July 31 of the same year.
