Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove "We hope that the world will not narrow into a neighborhood before it has broadened into a brotherhood." - L.B.J. The Making of a Memorial "This strip of land will always be a special place for me...It appears at the moment when you come over a rise and look down into the Potomac Valley and see the capital spread out with its great monuments - the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the towering Washington Monument, and sweeping on to the gleaming dome of the Capitol. The years never diminished the feeling of pride and elation we felt in those beautiful buildings that belong to all of us. " Lady Bird Johnson, shared these sentiments on April 6,1976 at the dedication of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove. The idea for a Memorial had its beginnings in 1973, following the death of Lyndon B. Johnson. His friends and colleagues wanted a fitting memorial to the mana tribute that would recall his love of the land, and recognize his achievements in preserving the Nation's environment. Built with private funds, this project gained support from people all across the country. In Oregon, school children raised cash with a bake sale, and in New Jersey a third grade class gave money earned through yard work. The Memorial is located in Lady Bird Johnson Park, a Potomac River island in Washington, D.C. In 1968, the island was renamed in Mrs. Johnson's honor for her role in beautifying the Nation's Capital. Later, 17 acres from this park were set aside for the LBJ Memorial Grove. The Grove committee, with Mrs. Johnson as Honorary Chair and more than 70 other men and women, planned this memorial as a different sort of tribute. It would be a living place where people could enjoy the pleasures and beauties of nature, not a great stone building or a bronze or marble statue.

"I know -from personal experience- that abiding values and abundant visions are learned in the homes of our people." -Lyndon Baines Johnson L yndon Johnson's family moved from a farm near Stonewall, Texas, to Johnson City (a distance of about fourteen miles) two weeks after his fifth birthday, in September 1913. For most of the next twenty-four years, this was their home. In 1913, the family included Lyndon's father, Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr.; his mother, Rebekah Baines Johnson; young Lyndon; and his sisters, Rebekah and Josefa. Over the years, two more children were born in this house - Lucia and Sam Houston Johnson. The family life that Lyndon Johnson experienced here as he grew to adulthood strongly influenced the man who became our thirty-sixth President.
The interests of young Lyndon's parents had a profound effect on his subsequent political career and on the issues he championed both as a Congressman and as President. His father was a state legislator for twelve years. As such, Sam Ealy Jr. was a popular and effective participant in democratic party politics. At the age of ten, young Lyndon was on the campaign trail working for his father's re-election. At thirteen, he sat by his father's side during legislative sessions. These experiences taught Lyndon Johnson the "political facts of life" and the necessary skills of a successful politician.

Vice President Johnson took the oath of office aboard the presidential plane, Air Force One , at Dallas' Love Field at 02:38 p.m., about 1.5 hours after Kennedy died. In the tempestuous days after the death of Kennedy, Johnson helped to calm national hysteria and ensure continuity in the presidency. In his first few months in office the new president succeeded in getting Congress to pass highly important legislation concerning civil rights, tax reduction, an antipoverty program, and conservation. Despite specific campaign pledges not to extend hostilities, the president and his advisers – fearful that South Vietnam would fall before communist aggression – steadily increased U.S. intervention until 500,000 American troops were in Indochina by 1967. As each new escalation met with fresh enemy response, and, as no end to the combat appeared in sight, the president's public support diminished markedly. His gravest criticism came from the "doves," those who favored an early negotiated settlement of the war. Strident student opposition to both the war and the draft system spread to include liberals, intellectuals, and civil-rights leaders, while the administration's budget buckled under the strain of wartime spending.

A Secret Service agent pushed the vice-president to the floor of the car and sat on him until they reached Parkland Memorial Hospital, where Johnson learned that Kennedy was dead. Fearing a conspiracy, he took the oath of office on board the presidential jet, Air Force One, before returning to Washington, D.C.
President. top Johnson quickly asserted his authority over the Democratic party, which offered him its 1964 presidential nomination without a contest. Emphasizing his legislative prowess and opposition to deeper U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam, he campaigned vigorously against the Republican nominee, Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona. Johnson and his running mate, Senator Hubert H. Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), like three other vice presidents in United States history, became chief executive upon the assassination of the president. He became President on Nov. 22, 1963, following the fatal shooting of President John F. Kennedy in a street in Dallas, Tex. A stunned nation rallied behind the energetic and ambitious new president, a product of the Texas hill country.
In 1964, Johnson, a Democrat, was elected to a full term as President. He and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota defeated the Republican ticket of Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona and Representative William E. Miller of New York. They received more than 61 per cent of the votes castthe largest percentage in U.S. history. Johnson chose not to run for reelection in 1968.
Johnson's political life
Lyndon Baines Johnson had served in Congress for almost 24 years before he was elected vice president in 1960. In 1937, at the age of 29, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1948. Five years later, at the age of 44, he was made Senate Democratic leaderthe youngest person ever elected to lead either party in the Senate.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States, the eldest of five children of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson, qqv Johnson's first important political position was as director of the National Youth Administration in Texas from 1935 to 1937. Construction of his system of roadside parks put young Texans to work and quietly introduced the participation of African Americans in some NYA programs. When the incumbent congressman of the Tenth Congressional District died in 1937, Johnson entered the race as a devoted supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He spent eleven years in the House and became intimately familiar with the legislative process. He was a supporter of Roosevelt's programs and policies and a close ally of majority leader (later speaker of the House) Sam Rayburn . He was the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 1940 and helped the Democrats retain control of the House. In 1941 he ran for the Senate from Texas but was narrowly defeated in a special election. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Johnson joined the navy as a lieutenant commander. He saw combat during an inspection tour of the South Pacific in 1942. He left the navy in response to President Roosevelt's directive that congressmen should remain in Washington. Johnson made another race for the Senate in 1948 against popular former governor

President Lyndon Baines Johnson
Served 1963-1965 (became President upon the death of Kennedy) Lyndon Baines Johnson was born August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, which his family had helped settle. He felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up, working his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College; he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent. In 1934, he married Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor. In 1937, he campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform, effectively aided by his wife. During World War II, he served briefly in the Navy as a lieutenant commander, winning a Silver Star in the South Pacific. After six terms in the House, Johnson was elected to the Senate in 1948. In 1953, he became the youngest Minority Leader in Senate history, and the following year, when the Democrats won control, Majority Leader. With rare skill, he obtained passage of a number of key Eisenhower measures. In the 1960 campaign, as John F. Kennedy's running mate, Johnson was elected Vice President. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in as President.

By my office and by personal conviction I am sworn to uphold that tradition." Interview, Baptist Standard , October, 1964 "This was the first nation in the history of the world to be founded with a purpose. The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: 'All men are created equal''government by consent of the governed''give me liberty or give me death.' Well, those are not just clever words, or those are not just empty theories. In their name Americans have fought and died for two centuries, and tonight around the world they stand there as guardians of our liberty, risking their lives. "Those words are a promise to every citizen that he shall share in the dignity of man. This dignity cannot be found in a man's possessions; it cannot be found in his power, or in his position. It really rests on his right to be treated as a man equal in opportunity to all others. It says that he shall share in freedom, he shall choose his leaders, educate his children, and provide for his family according to his ability and his merits as a human being.

Earlier in his career, Johnson served in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate, where he was elected majority leader. When he became President, his legislative experience combined with the force of his personality to make LBJ extremely successful in getting his programs enacted. As President, he signed more than 200 bills into law. Mr. Zesch made this humorous caricature for the President while LBJ recuperated from gallbladder surgery.

Assassination
In 1963, John F. Kennedy, the youngest man ever elected to the presidency, had a lot on his mind. Since he'd taken office in 1961, he'd been trying to lead the country in new directions. He had legislation he wanted passed: a civil rights bill, a tax cut bill, and a health care bill. There were also bills on equal pay for women, aid to cities and poor rural areas, manpower training, and a minimum wage. Despite early opposition, there were signs by 1963 that his ideas were beginning to be accepted in Congress. And Kennedy's reputation was growing worldwide. Great Britain's prime minister, Harold MacMillan, said this: "He seemed, in his own person, to embody all the hopes and aspirations of this new world that is struggling to emerge." But in Texas there was political trouble, and Texas's votes would be important in the coming presidential election in 1964, when Kennedy was hoping to win a second term. So when Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson , a Texan, asked Kennedy to undertake a peacemaking mission, the President thought he should make the trip. Senator J. William Fulbright urged him not to go. "Dallas is a very dangerous place," he said. "I wouldn't go there." Then Kennedy's press secretary got a letter. "Don't let the President go to Texas. Texas is too dangerous," the writer said. But the secretary put the letter aside. Everyone knew there was a group of noisy hatemongers in Dallas, but Kennedy didn't seem to worry. On a sunny November day, the President and his wife Jackie waved good-bye to their children, Caroline and John Jr., and flew off to the Lone Star State. The crowds in San Antonio and Houston and Fort Worth were unusually warm and encouraging. The President liked contact with people.
