Cultural Studies
One of these days we'll get to a ''where are they now''-themed issue of Marquee, tracing the roots of some of Athens' ''back in the day'' rock 'n' rollers. There are those cases where we won't have to look far Love Tractor , for instance, is coming out with a brand new (and fantastic, too) CD March 6, and band members still call Athens home whether they actually live here year-round or not. Julie Phillips Jordan more Jordan columns There's also the case for the Atlanta bands that frequented Athens and earned plenty of fans here way back when, too. One of those The Swimming Pool Q's , founded in 1978, entertaining new wavers alongside bands like the B-52's and the Brains is still playing, with almost the identical line-up that graced stages in the mid-'80s (Bill Burton on drums; vocals by the band's one Athens resident Anne Richmond Boston; Jeff Calder on vocals and guitar; Bob Elsey on lead guitar and Tim DeLaney on bass). The Q's play Tasty World at 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and their 1981 album ''The Deep End'' will be reissued sometime this year on DB Recs, to include 11 original tracks, 12 bonus tracks from 1978-1982, plus a 28-page booklet with archival photos.

There isn't much sign of traditional Arabic music in Jordan, but you will find an interesting hybrid of Arab-style singers backed up by orchestras of western and traditional instruments everywhere you go. The Bedouin are still hanging on to their musical traditions, with groups of men singing trance-like chants to accompany a lone belly-dancer. Architecture is the predominant visual art in the Arab world, partly because Islam forbids the depiction of living things. Throughout Jordan you will find spectacular mosques, ancient ruins from the Roman Empire and earlier, and magnificent mosaics. The Qusayr 'Amra is notable for its frescoes, one of which shows a nude woman bathing - an unusual art form for this part of the world. The Qur'an is one of the finest examples of classical Arabic writing, while the Al-Mu'allaqaat is an even older collection of Arab poetry. One of the best-known works of Arab literature is Alf Layla wa Layla, A Thousand and One Nights, a collection of tales from several centuries and countries. Bedouin artworks include silver jewellery, colourful textiles and a wide range of knives. Hospitality is a cornerstone of Arab life. It is commonplace for Jordanian families, particularly desert dwellers, to welcome strangers into their home. The tradition developed from the harshness of desert life - without food, water and shelter from strangers, most desert travellers would die. Wherever you go in Jordan, you are likely to hear the word, 'Welcome', and you will frequently be invited into people's homes for food or a cup of tea.

In Jordan culture and art go hand in hand. Poets, writers, novelists, painters and other artists preserve their rich Jordanian cultural heritage through their works. The Kingdom has 17 art exhibition galleries ranging between cultural centers, large private art institutions and privately owned exhibition halls. During the summer of 2001, art galleries were busy holding exhibitions of paintings ceramics, wood or metal sculptures, and seminars and lectures on different art issues. The art movement in Jordan passed through several stages, with impressionism finding its way first into Jordanian homes in the 1920s and 1930s. Impressionism was also the most popular style among Jordanian artists during the 1960s, and the country as a whole in the 1970s witnessed considerable increase in artistic activity. The signs of a modern art movement in Jordan started to show in the early 1950s. Eight amateur artists, among them, prominent Arab artists Muhanna Durra and Kamal Oudeh held an exhibition in the country.

    Culture and Customes in Jordan
Welcome To The Culture and Customs Home Page Jordanian people are of the few people who honor the customes and traditions very much. They have a very strong culture and they depend about that a lot. Some of the Jordanian customes and every day practices and the religion practices are confused together. Some of the things that are part of the religion are confused as being part of the culture and customes while other things that are part of the tradition and customes and dealt with as being part of the religion. People started to be more educated and to have more sence about what is what. They are starting to accept what is religion and what is customes, but the outside people who are not Jordanian . jordan, culture, Back to Top. jordan is an integral part of the Arabworld and thus displays cultural traits common to the region.
Country Info Jordan Introduction Jordan General Data Jordan Maps Jordan Culture ... Jordan Time and Date Jordan Culture Back to Top private and governmental efforts have been made to foster the arts through various cultural centres, notably in Amman and Irbid. Modernity has weakened the traditional Islamic injunction against the portrayal of animate objects; thus, in addition to the traditional architecture, decorative design, and various handicrafts, it is possible to find contemporary forms of painting and sculpture. Elaborate calligraphy and geometric designs often enhance manuscripts and mosques. As in the rest of the region, the oral tradition is prominent in artistic expression. Jordan's most famous poet, Mustafa Wahbah at-Tal, ranks among the major Arab poets of the 20th century. After World War II a number of important poets and prose writers emerged, though few have achieved an international reputation.
