A BRIEF HISTORY The Constitution The National Charter The Executive Branch ... The Judiciary A BRIEF HISTORY The Emirate of Transjordan was established in 1921 on the east bank of the Jordan River. It achieved independence from Britain in 1946 and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, the east and west banks of the Jordan River were united in order to save the parts of Palestine which remained under Arab control after the 1948 war from further Israeli occupation. Unity was ratified and declared in 1950. Seventeen years later, the west bank was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war. In 1988, Jordan disengaged from the West Bank. Jordan has been ruled by three monarchs: H.M. King Abdullah Ibn Al Hussein (1921-1951), H.M. King Talal Ibn Abdullah (1951-1952), H.M. King Hussein Ibn Talal (1952- present). THE CONSTITUTION The constitution outlines the powers and functions of the state, enforcement of laws, interpretation of the constitution, emergency powers and constitutional amendments, and the separation of the legislative, executive and judicial branches. THE NATIONAL CHARTER In January 1991, the commission presented the draft charter to the King, and on June 9 it was approved by a national Jordanian congress of over 2000 popular representatives made up of elected figures, political activists, intellectuals and academicians.

Jordan government ignores people¹s attitudes, say parties
Jordan, Politics, 7/31/1997 Six of Jordan's opposition parties said that successive Jordanian governments have given a blind eye to the attitudes of the Jordanian people, especially Jordanian people¹s rejection of normalization policies with Israel. Being dominated by the IMF's will, they are escalating relations with neighboring Arab countries such as Jordanian government¹s stand towards the Turkish aggression against Iraq. As a result, the country may have reached a stage of social instability.
In a press statement released on July 30, the six parties, including the progressive Aral Baath Party in Jordan, confirmed their principled stance by rejecting the Wadi Araba accord. This issue has enraged all Jordanian governments driving them to crackdown on Jordanian opposition, parties seeking to sow disorder among them as well as to marginalize their role. Previous Stories:
