Jordan: government intensifies anti-smoking campaign Jordan's Health Ministry has intensified its anti-smoking campaign, expanding a list of public places where smoking will be prohibited. The new regulation must be endorsed by the Cabinet of Prime Minister Ali Abu-Ragheb, Zeid Kayyed, the Health Ministry's secretary-general, said. Under the ban, airports, banks, conference halls, taxis, buses and other means of public transportation will be completely smoke-free. Smoking will only be allowed in designated areas at restaurants, coffee shops, cinemas, Internet cafes and universities. Violators - whether individuals or institutions - will be punished by up to one year in jail and a fine of 200 Jordanian dinars ($ 280). In the last four years, the government has banned smoking in public offices and aboard flights of its national carrier, Royal Jordanian, to short-haul destinations and to the United States. Official statistics show that more than 45 percent of Jordan's 4.6 million population have smoked at least once in a lifetime. At least 30 percent of the total - mostly teen-agers - are regular smokers of cigarettes and water pipes. Queen Rania, the wife of Jordan's King Abdullah II, is an ardent opponent of smoking. She has sponsored several anti-smoking rallies and seminars in the last two years.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Jordan government announces first major petrol hike in a decade AMMAN (AFP) - Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb recently announced the kingdom's first major petrol hike in over a decade, with new prices affecting gasoline, gas canisters and diesel for heating. He said the move will help shore up the country's ailing economy in line with recommendations by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and bring in to the economy 45 million dinars annually ($63 million), and 23 million dinars ($32 million) by the end of the year. The price of gasoline regular, premium and unleaded will go up by 14 to 15 percent, while gas will increase by 15 percent and diesel for heating by 3.8 percent. The cost of public transport will also be raised, Abu Ragheb said, although he was not immediately able to say by how much. According to government officials, the petrol hikes are still well below demands made by the IMF to raise petrol prices by 30 to 40 percent as part of efforts to maintain the budget deficit within a target of six percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Jordan faces a budget deficit of $253 million for 2001.
