Country Info Jordan Introduction Jordan General Data Jordan Maps Jordan Culture ... Jordan Time and Date Jordan Economy Back to Top poor in natural resources, and largely too arid for agriculture, Jordan is not economically self-supporting and must depend heavily on foreign aid, primarily from petroleum-rich Arab countries. Further burdens were placed on the economy after the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank, which contained nearly half of Jordan’s agricultural land, and by the subsequent influx of unemployed refugees. In the late 1980s Jordan’s economy became increasingly dependent on the overland transport of goods from the port of Al‘ Aqabah to Iraq and on remittances from Jordanian workers employed in the Persian Gulf states. Both these sources of revenue were jeopardized by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990; the Persian Gulf War of 1991 dealt a serious blow to the Jordanian economy. In 1998 Jordan’s budget revenues were $2 billion and its expenditures were $2.6 billion. The Jordanian economy was resilient and growing before the 1967 war. The West Bank, prior to its occupation by Israel during the war, contributed about one-third of Jordan's total domestic income. Economic growth continued after 1967 at a slower pace but was revitalized by a series of state economic plans. Trade increased between Jordan and Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–90), because Iraq gained access to Jordan's port of Al-'Aqabah. Jordan initially supported Iraqi president Saddam Hussein when Iraq occupied Kuwait during the 1990–91 Persian Gulf War, but it eventually agreed to the United Nations' trade sanctions against Iraq, its principal trading partner, and thereby put its whole economy in jeopardy. External emergency aid helped Jordan weather the crisis, and the economy was boosted by the sudden influx of 200,000–300,000 Palestinians expelled by Kuwait in 1991, many of whom brought in capital.

Jordan opposition says government must go
Bread price increase fuels anger
August 18, 1996
Web posted at: 2:25 p.m. EDT (1825 GMT) KARAK, Jordan (CNN) A coalition of 11 Jordanian opposition parties, outraged over a dramatic increase in bread prices, demanded the removal of the government Sunday. "We blame the government for what happened," the parties said in a statement, referring to riots over the price increases in the last few days. "We demand the dismissal of the government, whose presence and decisions are antagonizing citizens." The parties added their followers would never bow to King Hussein's "iron-fist" approach to end the violent demonstrations, the worst since the riots of 1989 that led to a change of prime minister and the start of democratic reforms. Hussein told CNN Sunday that parties supported by Iraq were behind the riots. The army, meanwhile, arrested 120 people and imposed a curfew on riot-stricken Karak, a medieval fortress city in southern Jordan. The anger against the government comes against a backdrop of widespread poverty, a stagnant economy and a growing gap between rich and poor. "The bread was the straw that broke the camel's back, but the whole situation has become unbearable," a prominent Islamic politician said.

GOVERNMENT
Jordan is a constitutional monarchy based on the constitution promulgated on January 8, 1952. Executive authority is vested in the king and his council of ministers. The king signs and executes all laws. His veto power may be overridden by a two-thirds vote of both houses of the National Assembly. He appoints and may dismiss all judges by decree, approves amendments to the constitution, declares war, and commands the armed forces. Cabinet decisions, court judgments, and the national currency are issued in his name. The king, who may dismiss other cabinet members at the prime minister's request, appoints the council of ministers, led by a prime minister. The cabinet is responsible to the Chamber of Deputies on matters of general policy and can be forced to resign by a two-thirds vote of 'no confidence' by that body.
Legislative power rests in the bicameral National Assembly. In July 2001, King Abdullah approved a temporary election lawsubject to validation when Parliament next convenesthat raised the number of members in the Chamber of Deputies from 80 to 104. The Chamber, elected by universal suffrage to a 4-year term, is subject to dissolution by the king. The king appoints the 40-member Senate for an 8-year term.
The constitution provides for three categories of courtscivil, religious, and special. Administratively, Jordan is divided into 12 governorates, each headed by a governor appointed by the king. They are the sole authorities for all government departments and development projects in their respective areas.

    Jordan - Government
In 1991 Jordan and the PLO had agreed on the principle of confederation between Jordan and whatever Palestinian entity ultimately emerged from the Middle East peace process.
In mid-July 1993 Jordan and the PLO had agreed to form six committees to discuss relations between Jordan and the Occupied Territories during a period of transitional Palestinian self-rule.
In addition to foreign arrivals, Jordan received large numbers of its own nationals fleeing from the Gulf region.
About 300,000 of these expatriates remained in Jordan after the liberation of Kuwait in February 1991, as the rulers of Kuwait had regarded most Jordanian and Palestinian residents as collaborators with the Iraqi occupation forces.
While Jordan welcomed the agreement concluded between Israel and the PLO as progress towards regional stability, it remained concerned by aspects of the Declaration of Principles which affected it directly and over which it had not been consulted.
In January 1994, after King Hussein had twice warned that Jordan might otherwise pursue its own agenda in the ongoing peace negotiations with Israel, the PLO agreed to sign a comprehensive economic co-operation agreement with Jordan, and to establish a joint committee to coordinate financial policy in the Occupied Territories.

Recession in Muslim Brothers' mediation between Hamas, Jordan's government
Regional Jordan, Politics, 10/27/1999 The mediation efforts played by the Muslim Brothers in Jordan between the Hamas movement and the Jordanian government have receded as the chairman of the movement's political bureau, Khaled Mashaal, refused from his prison the mediation of the "Muslim group."
He called on the Jordanian government to open a direct dialogue with the Hamas movement without resorting to "other channels." He added that such a dialogue requires the instant release of the detained Hamas leaders.
The Jordanian daily al-Dostour said in this regard, "Saying so, Mashaal has eventually abrogated from his prison the authorization he had offered to both member of the movement's political bureau Mousa Abu Marzouk, its representative in Syria Imad al-Alami, and Osama Hamdan, the movement's representative in Lebanon for the Muslim Brothers through the delegation which visited Damascus at the end of last week to make mediation efforts between the government and Hamas."
Earlier, Muslim Brothers executive bureau member Salem al-Falahat and the media spokesman for the group, Jamil Abu Baker, who met with Abu Marzouk, al-Alami and Hamdan in Damascus, had also visited Mashaal and Ibrahim Ghoseh, Hamas' official spokesman in al-Jweidah prison, carrying with them the conditions set by the Jordanian government to end the crisis.
