The area forming the kingdom of Jordan was occupied by the independent Nabataeans from the 4th century BC and perhaps earlier, until AD 106 when it became part of the roman province of Arabia. It was included in the Crusaders' kingdom of Jerusalem 1099-1187. Palestine ( the West Bank of present-day Jordan) and Transjordan ( the present-day East Bank) were part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire until its dissolution after World War I. Both were then placed under British administration by the League of Nations.
Transjordan acquired greater control of its own affairs than Palestine and separated from it in 1923, achieving full independence when the British mandate expired in 1946. In 1953 Hussein ibn Talal came to the Jordanian throne at the age of 17 . In 1958 Jordan and Iraq formed an Arab Federation, which ended five months later when the Iraqi monarchy was overthrown. King Hussein has kept control of Jordan's affairs as well as played a central role in Middle East affairs. Relations with his neighbors have fluctuated, but he has generally been a moderating influence. After Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Hussein played a key role in attempts to bring peace to the area, establishing a relationship with Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leader, Yasser Arafat. By 1984 the Arab world was split into two camps, with the moderates represented by Jordan, Egypt, and Arafat's PLO, and the militant radicals by Syria, Libya, and extreme wing of the PLO.

    Early History to Independence
The region of present-day Jordan roughly corresponds to the biblical lands of Ammon Bashan Edom , and Moab . The area was conquered by the Seleucids in the 4th century b.c. and was part of the Nabatean empire, whose capital was Petra, from the 1st century b.c. to the mid-1st century a.d. , when it was captured by the Romans under Pompey. In the period between the 6th and 7th centuries it was the scene of considerable fighting between the Byzantine Empire and Persia. In the early 7th century the region was invaded by the Muslim Arabs, and after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, it became part of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1516 the Ottoman Turks gained control of what is now Jordan, and it remained part of the Ottoman Empire until the 20th century. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, the region came under (1919) the government of

    History of Jordan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The land that became Jordan forms part of the richly historical Fertile Crescent region. Its history began around 2000 B.C., when Semitic Amorites settled around the Jordan River in the area called Canaan . Subsequent invaders and settlers included Hittites Egyptians Israelites Assyrians ... Persians , Greeks, Romans, Arab Muslims, Christian Crusaders, Mameluks Ottoman Turks, and, finally, the British. At the end of World War I , the territory now comprising Israel , Jordan, the West Bank , the Gaza Strip , and Jerusalem was awarded to the United Kingdom by the League of Nations as the mandate for Palestine and Transjordan. In 1922, the British divided the mandate by establishing the semi-autonomous Emirate of Transjordan, ruled by the Hashemite Prince

Jordan is a land steeped in history. It has been home to some of mankind's earliest settlements and villages, and relics of many of the world's great civilizations can still be seen today. As the crossroads of the Middle East, the lands of Jordan and Palestine have served as a strategic nexus connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. Thus, since the dawn of civilization, Jordan's geography has given it an important role to play as a conduit for trade and communications, connecting east and west, north and south. Jordan continues to play this role today. Because of its centralized location, the land of Jordan is a geographic prize which changed hands many times throughout antiquity. Parts of Jordan were included in the dominions of ancient Iraq, including the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian and Mesopotamian Empires. From the west, Pharaonic Egypt extended its power and culture into Jordan, while the nomadic Nabateans built their empire in Jordan after migrating from the south of the Arabian peninsula. Finally, Jordan was incorporated into the classical civilizations of Greece, Rome and Persia, the relics of which are scattered across the Jordanian landscape. Since the mid-seventh century CE, the land of Jordan has remained almost continuously in the hands of various Arab and Islamic dynasties. Ancient Jordan

    Petra the Drama of History
Movie Clip from Petra (Quick Time) The jewel of South Jordan is Petra, the unique, 2,000-year-old rock-carved city, the pink and salmon coloured capital of the Nabataean Arabs. Petra is always breath-taking, never to be forgotten. It flourished for over 400 years around the time of Rome and Christ, until it was occupied by the Roman legions of the Emperor Trajan in 106 AD. The Petra basin boasts over 800 individual monuments that were mostly carved from the kaleidoscopic sandstone by the technical and artistic genius of the Nabataeans. The wealth and political power of this indigenous Arab people derived from their control of the international trade routes that linked China, India and Southern Arabia with the wealthy Mediterranean markets Greece, Rome, Egypt and Syria. The drama of visiting Petra starts with the journey, on horseback, horse-drawn carriage or foot, into the mountain-ringed city along the siq, a winding, one kilometer long fissure through the surrounding and overhanging cliffs. At the end of the siq, you experience a thrill that is as dramatic today as it was two millennia ago: suddenly, turning the corner and passing beneath two overhanging cliffs, you come face-to-face with the Khasneh (The Treasury), the baroque Greek temple-style royal tomb that is Petra's most famous and impressive monument. You are totally engulfed by the magic and the beauty, but there is much more yet to see. From here, you penetrate deeper and deeper into the 2,000-year-old city, surrounded everywhere by hundreds of Petra's carved and built structures: soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a carved Roman-style theatre, large and small houses, burial chambers and funerary banqueting halls, water channels and reservoirs, baths, monumental staircases, cultic installations, markets, arched gates, public buildings, paved streets, and many other structures whose mystery is matched by their compelling and enduring beauty. From the ancient city-centre, you set on dramatic walks and climbs along winding mountain trails to some of Petra's more remote treasures, such as

    The Tragedy of Palestine
While Jewish immigration to Palestine intifada of the late 1980s, was the first major outbreak of Palestinian-Zionist hostilities. Although the strict terms imposed on Transjordan since 1921 prevented Emir Abdullah from establishing official contacts with Palestinian Arabs under the British mandate, he nonetheless gave refuge to Palestinian leaders and political activists. He constantly warned the British against earmarking Arab lands for a Jewish national home and allowing increased Jewish immigration to Palestine. He also intervened at various levels on behalf of the Palestinians, while warning of impending disaster should a diplomatic solution to the problem not be found. His predictions fell on deaf ears, but came true nonetheless. The crisis of Palestine reached a boiling point in the years immediately after the war. With international sympathy firmly behind the Jews in the wake of the Holocaust, Zionist leaders pressured the British to admit thousands of displaced Jews. At the same time, underground Jewish groups such as the Irgun and the renegade Stern Gang initiated a campaign of terrorism against the British. Washing its hands of the whole imbroglio, Britain declared in February 1947 that its mandate over Palestine would end on May 14, 1948. The matter was then addressed by the United Nations, which, after rejecting various plans, voted for the partition of Palestine in November 1947. The plan called for the
