For nearly 100 years, our family has provided
well-built, quality furniture to the people of New England. It all started with our grandfather
Samuel, selling furniture from the back of his
truck. Now, we're proud to say that a 4th generation continues the tradition.

In the next few years, Jordan's
Furniture will double in size, both in
volume and employees. An average furniture store turns over its inventory 1 - 2 times per year. At Jordan's, we turn over inventory 13 times per year. Whereas a typical furniture store is promotion and sales-oriented, Jordan's has "underprices" and no sales. The Avon and Natick stores each have a 650-car parking lot. On an average weekend day, more than 4,000 people visit the store. Although most retailers spend approximately 7% for marketing and advertising, Jordan's spends about 2%. As Jordan's continues to grow, sales per square foot also increase. Jordan's averages sales of $950 per square foot whereas most furniture retailers average sales of $150 per square foot. According to "Furniture Today", Jordan's has the #1 sales per square foot in the country. As of 2001, Jordan's has 4 stores with the following square feet of retail space: Natick (110,000 sq ft), Avon (85,000 sq ft), Waltham (35,000 sq ft) and Nashua (54,000 sq ft) Plans are for a 5th store in Reading, MA in 2003 - the biggest store of all Jordan's.

P.A.W.S. (People Aware of the Well-being of the Speechless) began as a dog park advocacy group back in 1998. It's founder, Janine Jordan (now Janine Lilja), wanted to provide a place for dogs to run free, socialize, play and exercise in the comfort of an enclosed area; a place where dogs don't have to worry about cars, having too little room to play, or getting lost. After four long years of lobbying for a dog park in Vacaville, the dream is a reality!
P.A.W.S. has a ten-member Board of Directors, several committees (Media and Fund Raising, Events Coordination, and Executive Committee) dozens of volunteers and supporters, and is growing every week. Please help us support and maintain the dog park by becoming a P.A.W.S. member

Air Combat Maneuvers

The History of the RJAF
During the period of the Great Arab Revolt, the Arab legion became known as the best fighting force in the Arab world. Its forces relied entirely on British air support to soften the Turkish positions during their attacks against the Turks. The first British air support for the Arab Legion took place over Jordan on the 28 th of August 1917, when the Arab forces requested the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) based in Egypt to bomb Turkish targets in Ma’an area. The RFC supported the Arab Revolt forces and maintained air superiority untill these forces reached Damascus, thus ending 400 years of Turkish occupation of the Arabian peninsula and the surrounding territory. All RAF air activities in Transjordan were controlled from Palestine untill 1921 when RAF Squadron No.III was renumbered 14 squadron at Ramleh (Palestine). Later this squadron moved to Amman on April 1st 1921, to assist the new Emirate of Transjordan and remained there until the start of the World WarII.
Jordan, from its establishment as a separate mandated country in 1920, relied totally on the British for air support. Two air stations were constructed, one in Amman (RAF Amman)and one in Mafraq (RAF Mafraq), and were officially opened in 1931. Amman airfield was shorter so Mafraq airfield was used for international flights.

Early History to Independence
The region of present-day Jordan roughly corresponds to the biblical lands of Ammon Bashan Edom , and Moab . The area was conquered by the Seleucids in the 4th cent. B.C. and was part of the Nabatean empire, whose capital was Petra, from the 1st cent. B.C. to the mid-1st cent. A.D. , when it was captured by the Romans under Pompey. In the period between the 6th and 7th cent. it was the scene of considerable fighting between the Byzantine Empire and Persia. In the early 7th cent. the region was invaded by the Muslim Arabs, and after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, it became part of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1516 the Ottoman Turks gained control of what is now Jordan, and it remained part of the Ottoman Empire until the 20th cent. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, the region came under (1919) the government of Faisal I , centered at Damascus. When Faisal was ejected by French troops in July, 1920, Transjordan (as Jordan was then known) was made (1920) part of the British League of Nations mandate of Palestine. In 1921

Brief History
According to Biblical tradition the descendants of Esau, Isaac’s son were the Edomites of Transjordan, in a line stretching down through King Herod the Great. In the 2nd century BC the Nabatean kingdom flourished in the Petra oasis. The area was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th century. In the 12th century Christian Crusaders ruled from Jerusalem, and at the beginning of the 16th century it fell under the Ottoman rule.
During WW I Arab nationalists joined forces with the British in the revolt against the Ottomans. The area was included in the League of Nations mandate for Palestine (1920). Transjordan, the mandated area east of the Jordan River was granted autonomy in 1923 and full independence in 1946. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy headed by H M King Hussein Ibn Talal.

The First Library in East Jordan
In March 1917, the first organizational meeting was held to formulate plans to build a public library in East Jordan. In May, a board of directors was elected and a request made to the Carnegie Foundation to ascertain if the offer to give $10,000 for the erection of a library building in East Jordan would still be good one year from that date if the Board deferred building until that time. In March of 1918, other services required to build the library were contracted. The total cost of the building came to $9,453.25. In October of that year the furniture was bought and Mrs. A.E. Sunstedt was hired as the librarian. The first board meeting was held on July 7, 1919, followed by an open house four days later to celebrate the new library at its Main Street location. By October 1919, 1,115 people had visited the new library. Because the 2,000 square foot upper level was adequate for the library collection at the time, the lower level was used as offices for East Jordan Iron Works and later converted to storage space. This was used as a library until September 1989 when the library operation was moved to its present site at One Library Lane. Top of page
Through the Years
In November of 1985, the East Jordan Public Library became the Jordan Valley District Library. To do so, it required the approval of two governmental units. The city of East Jordan and the East Jordan School District were those two. On Monday, June 9, 1986, voters approved a one-mill levy for ten years for the library. This provided a stable annual budget. The school district acted as collector for the library's millage, but the library was its own entity, controlled by its own board. The board consisted of four members appointed by the city and four by the school district.

ORDAN is perhaps one of the friendliest countries in the Arab world to visitors. Jordan and its people offer much in the way to whet any tourist's appetite and guarantee a stay that is hospitable and full of fun and fascination. A small country carved out of the heart of the Middle East, it offers concentrated pleasure to anyone wishing to explore the orient and absorb its breathtaking past. Jordan presents in many ways a montage of the modern and traditional, ancient and contemporary. It is as new as it is old, as rich as it is poor, and as real as it is eternal magic. This it owes to the fact that Jordan was home to many of the great early civilisations and today entertains tourists with well preserved archaeological sites scattered throughout the country. A trip to Jordan is only complete until you've paid homage to the castles, theatres and temples of the many ancient cultures that existed here throughout time. The Graeco-Roman cities in
