Clash of the Titans The Road to Athens gets bumpy in San Jose
By Kevin Neuendorf // USOC Media Relations // Dec. 23, 2002
The 2003 Titan Games will take us back to a simpler time; a competition stripped of such glamour sports as swimming, basketball and gymnastics, and focused on combative sports steeped in Olympic history and teeming with intriguing and flamboyant personalities. Add in a circus-like element of four simultaneous competitions plus the lure of the world’s best, and what you have stuffed into the Event Center at San Jose State University is positively Titanesque. Played out over three days, Feb. 13-15, the Titan Games are Cupid’s antithesis as there will be no love lost between combatants battling for over $80,000 in prize money and for the title of Ultimate Titan. The “Road To Athens” for America’s elite boxers, fencers, shot putters, wrestlers, weightlifters and judo, taekwondo and karate athletes matches them up with the world’s powers in each of these respective sports. It’s a sporting mix sure to please any fan. Boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and forms of judo were all part of the original Olympic Games and the excitement and intensity generated by these sports carries with us today. U.S. boxers will re-acquaint themselves with their biggest rivals, the Cubans. Wrestling will showcase college legend Cael Sanderson and local hero Eric Guerrero, a former star at San Jose’s Independence High School and three-time national champion at Oklahoma State.

Judo, yachts: Israel remembers Olympic highlights
RONI B. ROBBINS Atlanta Jewish Times From its earliest days, Israel's eyes have been on the gold. Soon after the United Nations decided on Nov. 29, 1947, to establish the state of Israel, the nation's top athletes were already nurturing Olympic dreams. The brand-new Jewish state tried to participate in the 1948 Olympics, held in London, but was disallowed because its National Olympic Committee had not yet been recognized. But in Helsinki four years later, 26 athletes seven in track and field, four in shooting, two in swimming and the rest on the national basketball team comprised Israel's first Olympic delegation. Although the athletes did not make a strong showing, back home they enjoyed star treatment, as their compatriots considered them national heroes fighting to establish Israel's legitimacy in the world's eyes. So far, the Jewish state has sent a total of 192 athletes 160 men and 32 women to 10 games. Many remember the highlights: In Munich in 1972, 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were murdered by terrorists.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

Students will learn in which country a sport originated, where the country is located, and which animal could be considered an Olympian in that sport. MATERIALS
  • world map
    research materials
BACKGROUND
Some sports originate in one country while others are a combination of several sports stemming from different countries. Olympic sports that can be traced to one country include soccer and hockey (Great Britain), basketball and volleyball (U.S.A.), fencing (Egypt), judo (Japan), and shooting (Switzerland). Olympic handball is a combination of games from three countries: Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Denmark. ACTION 2. Have students research their sport, finding a description of the sport and its country of origin. Students who chose the same sport may work in groups, deciding among themselves how the research should be divided. 3. Hang a world map on the wall. On the map, ask each student or group to label the country in which their sport originated, and describe the sport to their classmates. DEEPER DEPTHS
Have students research an animal that would qualify as an animal Olympian in their chosen sport. Using the Olympic Animal Athlete cards as an example, have them create their own card that can be copied and shared with classmates.

  • By Pamela Rice Hahn
It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.
