Olympic Outlook: Will Chinese Women Judo Reach New Heights?
The Chinese women's judo team, which has won an Olympic gold twice before, have set the goal of "attacking all sides, reaching new heights."
This goal has two meanings. First, the Chinese team will enter all seven events of the Olympics and try their best in every event. Thus, is the meaning of "attacking all sides." Second, the Chinese team won only one gold in the last two Olympics. They will strive to win more golds or medals than the previous Olympics. Thus, "reaching new heights."
Since the event the Chinese team was strongest in was cancelled for this Olympics, China's hopes of winning a gold has focused on the weight class above seventy-eight kilograms. In this event, the Chinese team has the gold medalist from the Atlanta Games, Sun Fuming, and another veteran Yuan Hua. Because every team is only allowed to send one athlete per event, China hasn't decided who it will send. Considering their conditions, Yuan Hua has a better chance to go to the Olympics. Since Sun Fuming won the gold in the last Olympics, her training has been affected. Plus, her injuries have weakened her. Yuan Hua has been in good condition in recent years. Although she lost the championships twice because of tactical errors in the World Judo Championships, she won the gold three times in the Japan Fukuoka World A Class Competitions, which are at about the same level as the World Judo Championships. She also won the gold in the

Help Pass the Olympic Sports Revitalization Act The gymnastics community is a closely knit web of coaches, judges, gymnasts and parents that always pull together when really needed. That's what needs to happen now, but we're also going to need some help. What we need to do to really get this bill some attention is to get support from all the sports that will be covered in the bill. By passing the the OSR Act the following sports would receive immediate finanical and legal benefits: wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, rifle/shooting, fencing, outdoor track, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, water polo, judo, field hockey, team handball, synchronized swimming, equestrian, badminton and archery. We all need to do our part to involve anyone we know that is involved with these sports. The more help we get the faster the government will be forced to act. I have already emailed my representatives and all of the senators that are in a position to help with the bill, but I have started a petition as well. Equipment: Contestants wear a judogi, which is loose fitting pants and a jacket tied by a black belt. They compete on a mat that is 32.8 feet square. Rules: Bouts last five minutes for men and four for women. A match can be one by a single point, which may be scored if one contestant throws his or her opponent to the mat so that the opponent's back strikes the canvas. If the throw is executed with perfect form, a point is awarded, and the match is over. If the form is not perfect, half a point may be awarded; another half can be gained by holding the opponent on the mat 20 seconds. Thirty seconds of holding is worth a full point as well. If no point is scored in the time allotted, the match goes to the person who has either a half point or who has accumulated the most credit. Bronze medals are awarded to each semifinal loser. Judo, a sport originating in Japan, was first included in the 1964 Olympic Games. Technique is stressed over strength in this sport. The event is usually held in multi-use indoor facilities over 7 days of competition. The International Judo Federation (IJF) , allows 400 judokas to participate, 230 men and 170 women divided into 7 weight categories ranging, for men, from less than 60 kg to over 100 kg, with the remaining categories separated by intervals of 6 kg each and, for women, from less than 48 kg to over 78 kg, with the rest of the intermediate categories being separated by an interval of 4 kg each.
Facilities Main: The IJF's minimum requirements consist of a platform of 360 m x 18 m with a height of 1 meter. This platform should be covered by two 14 m x 14 m mats then covered by a tatami with a perimeter zone of 6 meters surrounding the platform to accommodate the judges, trainers, referees, etc. The minimum recommended seating capacity ranges from 5 000 in the preliminary rounds to 8 000 in the final rounds.

Technique and balance , rather than power, is the key. Did You Know? Despite the fact that judo means, "the gentle way," it is the only Olympic sport where choking and breaking an opponent's arm is legal. Wierdest Rule: According to the rulebook, judoka must "be clean and have dry skin and short finger nails and toe nails. They must also be free from body odor."
