Ozkan beats French rival Larbi Benboudaoud
Chechen-born Huseyin Ozkan gave Turkey its first Olympic judo gold medal on Sunday, and Legna Verdecia underlined the depth of the Cuban challenge, as Japan's gold hunt in their own sport stalled in Sydney. Ozkan, said his under-66kg featherweight win over French world champion Larbi Benboudaoud would be celebrated not only in Turkey but also in Chechnya which he left in 1993. "My family still lives in Chechenya and I am also famous there," the 28-year-old Ozkan said. "My friends and my family are waiting for the news. But there is no television broadcasting in Chechenya. When they hear about this, they will be very happy."
In Birmingham, the Frenchman caught me first and could execute his technique. Now we are even at 1-1
Huseyin Ozkan Ozkan, who lost to Benboudaoud in the world championship final last October, was slapped with a warning early in the final but threw his French opponent at one minute 44 seconds. Technique "In Birmingham, the Frenchman caught me first and could execute his technique," Ozkan said. "Now we are even at 1-1."

Judo First Olympic Appearance: 1964 (men); 1992 (women)
by Mike Morrison WHILE MANY other martial arts focus more on punching and kicking, judo is a mix of strength, flexibility and using a competitor's strength, weight, and momentum against him or her. Technique and balance , rather than power, is the key.
    Did You Know?
Despite the fact that judo means, "the gentle way," it is the only Olympic sport where choking and breaking an opponent's arm is legal.
    Wierdest Rule:
According to the rulebook, judoka must "be clean and have dry skin and short finger nails and toe nails. They must also be free from body odor."
Men's judo contests last a maximum of five minutes , while women's last a maximum of four . The first competitor (or judoka ) to score one point wins the match. Points are won via a successful throw onto the mat or a legitimate hold that "makes the opponent submit or immobilizes him or her for 25 seconds." If neither has scored a point, " half-points " are counted and if no one has any of those, the most " credits " wins.

    Introduction to Olympic Martial Arts
The Sydney Olympic Games are just days away, and at About Martial Arts, we're getting ready for the spectacle. This year's Olympics introduce tae kwon do as an official Olympic sport, making it the first kick/punch martial art in the games. New advances in fencing might do away with the wires that attach fencers to their scoring devices; just like cell phones and remote controls, fencing is going wireless. And competition in judo promises to be some of the most exciting matches ever. We've put together Viewer's Guides for these three Olympic martial arts, outlining the history, rules, and equipment of each sport. Consult these About Martial Arts special sections for more information: En garde! Although fencers can sometimes look like big white spiders playing tag, this is a serious martial art, with a heritage of duels and medieval warfare. But don't think it just has merit for its historical value

USA Sydney 2000 Olympics Judo Team
Dateline: 01/03/00 The results of the official selections for the United States Olympic Judo Team are in, and players in all 14 weight classes were announced on New Year's Day. Players qualify for the Olympic team through their national ranking and qualifying points in international tournaments. This team marks the first time the United States had to qualify each weight class. For the 1996 Games in Atlanta, the U.S. was granted a host country exemption. Qualification was based on either a top-8 finish in the World Championships , held last October in England, or by means of a quota system within the Pan American Judo Union. The quota system established 7 tournaments over the past 2 years in which countries could earn quota points. For each weight category, the USA had to finish among the top 6 countries for men and among the top 3 countries for women. Three players qualified through the World Championships criteria:
    • Colleen Rosenstee l, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, finished 7th at +78kg
