Published on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 in the lndependent/UK Cover-up at US Justice Department by Andrew Buncombe in Washington It is only one breast and it is supposed to be art but for the US Attorney General, John Ashcroft, it was apparently one breast too many.
Reports suggested yesterday that Mr Ashcroft had grown tired of giving briefings at the US Justice Department in front of two naked statues, one known as "Minnie Lou". As a result, he has now ordered that tasteful curtains be used to cover the offending anatomical feature. The aluminum Art Deco statues date from the 1930s when the Great Hall in the Justice Department was built as a grand, two-storey room to be used for department events and ceremonies. The formal entrance leading up a winding stairway is adorned with murals depicting great figures in the history of law, including Moses, Hammurabi, and John Marshall, the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The two enormous statues are sited at the opposite end of the hall. On the left, a female figure represents the Spirit of Justice and, to the right, the male is the Majesty of Justice. The male statue is clad with a strategically-draped cloth while the female statue wears a sort of toga that reveals one breast. For Mr Ashcroft, the decision of the sculptor not to chose a more modest piece of clothing, was, in his opinion, obviously something of a boob.

US Justice Department drops demand for Microsoft break-up
By Mike Ingram 10 September 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Microsoft, the Justice Department and the State and DC attorneys general are due in court to begin remedy hearings on September 21. One week earlier, US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a Democrat selected at random by computer to hear the case, will have received a brief prepared jointly by the parties on what issues are still to be resolved. Justice Department officials insist that the decision to abandon the breakup remedy was made by Charles A James, the new antitrust chief who had been given full discretion by Attorney General John D Ashcroft. James briefed Ashcroft, Perry and Alberto Gonzales, the White House counsel, on the decision, but Justice officials claim none of these had any influence over what action to take. New York Times it had found that Microsoft had donated $6.1 million overall, of which $3.2 million had gone to Republicans. If this report is true, then Microsoft spent far more on greasing the wheels of both parties than official reports indicate.

In a move that will keep the Mojave Cross up for at least a few more months, the U.S. Department of Justice appealed the ruling that declared the cross unconstitutional because it is on government-owned land. Congressman Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, applauded the decision while American Civil Liberties Union attorney Peter Eliasberg called the appeal a waste of taxpayers' money and a "desperate attempt' to keep the cross in place. "Justice Department attorneys understand that this is memorial to those who died defending America should be preserved,' Lewis said in a written statement.

NEW JERSEY Last week, the State of New Jersey and its Division of State Police entered into a far-reaching settlement with the U.S. Justice Department that includes the establishment of an independent monitor to ensure that racial profiling by state troopers cease. The decree states that "state troopers may not rely to any degree on the race or national or ethnic origin of motorists in selecting vehicles for traffic stops and in deciding upon the scope and substance of post-stop actions, except where state troopers are on the look-out for a specific suspect who has been identified in part by his or her race or national or ethnic origin." The decree further requires that troopers request consent to search only when they have reasonable suspicion that the search will reveal evidence of a crime. U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AGREES TO PAY $100,000
TO VICTIM OF U.S.-RUSSIAN PERSECUTION
Information Times, August 22, 1997 WASHINGTON, DC, USA - August 22, 1997 (FPS) The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) on Thursday agreed to pay $100,000 compensation in Alexandre P. Konanykhine Habeas Corpus case. Other compensations will be discussed starting next week. Konanykhine points out: "The KGB manipulation is getting expensive to the U.S. taxpayers." In the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, he had filed a Petition in March 1997 for issuance of Writ of Habeas Corpus of appropriate relief of unlawful detention and prosecution, due to: unlawful arrest, malicious prosecution, malicious abuse of legal process by Respondent, abuse of discretion by Respondent, willful misrepresentation of material facts by Respondent and his agents (perjury and fraud), and an array of due process and Constitutional violations. Petitioner, Alexandre Konanykhine, acting pro se, petitioned the Court to issue a Writ of Habeas Corpus to require his release from unlawful detention by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Petitioner alleged that he was unlawfully imprisoned, detained, and restrained of his liberty by the Respondent, William J. Carroll, District Director of the INS Washington District Office. "This decision by the Department of Justice is long overdue. This settlement gives back to Mr. Konanykhine his freedom and his dignity."

Monday May 27, 2002 Printer friendly version Email to a friend US JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO APPEAL OREGON ASSISTED SUICIDE DECISION WASHINGTON, May 27, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The US Justice Department confirmed Friday that it will appeal a court decision barring the department from using its authority over the federal Controlled Substances Act to quash Oregon's practice of legal physician-assisted suicide. In his April ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Jones slammed Attorney General John Ashcroft accusing him of attempting to "stifle an ongoing, earnest and profound debate in the various states concerning physician-assisted suicide."
Under Ashcroft's November 6 directive, Oregon doctors who prescribe federally controlled drugs for assisted suicide and Oregon pharmacists who dispense the drugs for assisted suicide could have their DEA licenses to prescribe or dispense federally controlled substances revoked. Loss of a DEA license would make it difficult for most physicians to continue to practice medicine because they would no longer be able to prescribe virtually any kind of pain-killing medication.
Over ninety people have been killed via legal assisted suicide in the state.

Department Mission and History
The mission of the Department of Justice Coordination is to provide a high level of research and development expertise, including monitoring and evaluation of present and future justice programs within Pinellas County, to insure that the citizens of Pinellas receive the highest quality justice and public safety services for the resources provided. The Board of County Commissioners created the Department of Justice Coordination on May 7, 1991. The history extends back to 1982 when the Chief Judge of the Circuit created the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. This council was composed of the State Attorney, the Chief Judge, the chief criminal administrative judge, the Sheriff, and the police chiefs from the cities of St. Petersburg and Clearwater. On December 5, 1983, the staff director for this council started work with space and secretarial support provided by the Sheriff and salary provided by Pinellas County through the office of the Chief Judge. One year later, the Office of Justice Planning was created by the court with its own budget, space, and authority.

Michigan's Anti-Terror Strategy Approved by U.S. Justice Department;Among the First States to Submit Plans to Dept. of Justice October 16, 2001 Governor John Engler said today that the U.S. Department of Justice has approved Michigan’s anti-terror strategy and terrorism threat assessment. The plan – one of the first submitted to Washington – was developed by the Michigan State Police (MSP) Emergency Management Division with information and support from 94 emergency management programs statewide and the review and approval of the Michigan Anti-Terrorism Task Force. "Michigan has a long and successful record of state agencies working cooperatively with local and federal government to plan and prepare for emergencies," said Governor Engler. "Our ability to respond quickly makes Michigan a national leader in domestic preparedness." Set up by Governor Engler in 1996, the Michigan Anti-Terrorism Task Force includes representatives from the MSP; the Michigan National Guard; state departments of Environmental Quality, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Community Health; the U.S. Department of Defense; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; the U.S. Public Health Service; and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with local agencies.

The US Justice Department has begun antitrust investigations into the online music business, in order to avoid online music being dominated by the "big five" music companies.
Last week Rick Boucher, D-Va., and Chris Cannon, R-Utah, two members of the US House of Representatives, introduced the Music Online Competition Act, hoping to prevent MusicNet (which was funded by Warner Music Group, Bertelsmann AG and EMI) and Pressplay (which is owned by Sony and Vivendi Universal), the two upcoming online subscription services which are under investigation, from dominating the marketplace.
According to the Act, in case the two online services cross-license their catalogues to each other, they must offer the exact same terms to competing online music distributors and Webcasters, avoiding any form of "duopoly" for getting the control of 80 per cent of the online music distribution market or the rising of competition in music distribution.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), representing most of the companies, was against the Act, believing that the new industry didn't need any kind of legislation.
