Australia's kangaroos
Kangaroos are native to the Australian continent and to parts of Papua New Guinea. Most species are only found in Australia. There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives. While it is impossible to determine the exact number of kangaroos in Australia, the population of the four most common species is thought to be more than 50 million. All kangaroos belong to the super-family Macropodidae (or macropods, meaning 'great-footed'). The macropod family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. These species are also found in Papua New Guinea. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo. This family of kangaroos lives only in Australia. Kangaroos of different types live in all of the diverse areas of Australia, from cold-climate rainforests and desert plains to tropical areas.
Life and habitat
Kangaroos are herbivorous, eating a range of plants, and in some cases fungi. Most are nocturnal but some are active in the early morning and late afternoon. Different kangaroo species live in a range of different environments. Potoroids, for example, make nests while tree-kangaroos live above ground in trees. Larger species of kangaroo tend to shelter under trees or in caves and rock clefts.

They are marsupials They are the only large mammal that can hop. They live in groups called mobs.
  • Males are called bucks. Females are called does. Babies are called joeys.
Joeys are the size of a jellybean when they are born. They are pink, blind and hairless. They live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk. When they're about a year old they don't need mum's milk any more – but they stay close to her as they still have a lot to learn. Kangaroos are herbivores . They eat only grasses, leaves and the shoots of small trees. As they do most of their feeding in the evening or at night they are nocturnal animals. How do kangaroos keep cool?
  • They rest in the heat of the day.
  • They pant like a dog.
  • They dig shallow holes under trees and lie in the cool sand.
  • They have a spit bath by licking their arms.
Kangaroos are very good swimmers but they will only take to water when chased or if they have no other choice. They have very good hearing, eyesight and sense of smell.

UPDATES, as of 8th Jan, 2003: While we are all wishing for peace and an end to terrorism in our world, please start thinking of what it is like out there for kangaroos in their world. It is about 500% worse for them. So let's hope for peace and an end to terrorism for kangaroos as well. Doroothy let me peek into her pouch and there was the tiniest baby xx. I'm not sure how her twisted leg will cope with the weight of her joey when it is older, we'll see. It seems that NPWS have forgotten about their agreement during 2000, to a No Kill Zone of Red kangaroos in this area (mentioned on page "Murders and Mysteries). The process has started again but I am not sure yet where it is up to. There are so few Reds in this area, it is criminal that any more should be shot.

Kangaroos stomachs contain different bacteria
By Richard Black
BBC science correspondent Scientists in Australia are investigating whether kangaroos could help combat global warming. Australia's sheep and cattle produce huge amounts of methane, an important greenhouse gas - but kangaroos do not. Researchers believe it might be possible to use bacteria found in the stomachs of kangaroos to reduce methane output from cows and sheep. Methane emissions from farm animals account for about 15% of Australia's greenhouse gas production. Yet kangaroos, feeding on the same sorts of grass, produce no methane at all. Mystery bacteria It is all down to the bacteria in their stomachs which help process the food they eat. Farm animals make 15% of Australia's greenhouse gases
The stomach is basically a big fermentation tank, with lots of hydrogen in the frothy mix; sheep and cattle bacteria turn that hydrogen into methane, whereas kangaroo bacteria do something else with it.

The BBC will show exclusive terrestrial highlights of the one-off Test in Sydney on the Super League Show on 14 July at 1115BST. New South Wales scrum-half Andrew Johns has been named captain of the Australian team to play Great Britain in the one-off rugby league Test in Sydney on Friday. Johns beat off the challenge of Queensland captain Gorden Tallis and takes over from Brad Fittler as skipper. The selectors have chosen four new caps and made no fewer than 11 changes to the team that wrapped up a 2-1 Ashes Series victory over Britain last November. The newcomers are Newcastle team-mates Timana Tahu and Scott Simpson, Brisbane rookie centre Brent Tate and Canterbury's giant forward Willie Mason.
I would not rule out the possibility of him playing in the 2007 World Cup
Queensland's Jeff Miller Australian Rugby League (ARL) chairman Colin Love admitted the selectors had struggled to pick the new captain.

Kangaroos and Wallabies
The Kangaroo and the Emu appear on Australia's coat of arms. Kangaroos The term kangaroo is a common term used for the larger members of the macropod, (big toe) family. There are other names given to the smaller members of the species, but if they are a macropod they are a kangaroo. Fossilized skeletons have been excavated of kangaroos as large as 10 ft. tall and 650 lbs., such as the "Short Faced Kangaroo", which is now extinct and as small as 8 oz. in the "Rat Kangaroo". Many have become extinct through time, but many have reached their demise since the 1900's with man's encroachment. There are over 60 different species of kangaroos confirmed alive in Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand and a few surrounding islands. Some have only been seen a few times, but are believed to still exist. The most commonly seen kangaroo is the Eastern Grey Macropus Giganteus Starting with the largest, the kangaroo, weighing up to 160 lbs. to the wallabies weighing in the 20-30 lb. range and descending to the smallest, being the rat kangaroo at one pound. The different species or types of kangaroos, with the possibly extinct ones omitted, are the kangaroos (3 types), wallaroo (3 types), tree kangaroo (8 types), wallaby (26 types), monjon (1 type), dorcopsis (6 types), pademelon (4 types), bettong (5 types), potoroo (3 types), rat kangaroo (1 type). They are mostly adaptable to new environments with wild populations accidentally started in Hawaii with a pair of rock wallabies escaping from their crate at the airport and through time have built a herd (mob) of over 100 head.

- 1960, 1962-69, 135 games, 8 goals. (b.10 Sep 1941, 179cms, 81.5kgs).
Recruited from West Coburg, O'Brien was originally a half-forward flanker who found his niche as a half-back when shifted there by Alan Killigrew. He played close and tight . When he couldn't get a game in 1961 he wanted a clearance to Footscray, but fortunately for the Roos he stayed on and became a stalwart on the backline. ...from The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers - Every AFL/VFL Player Since 1897
My Dad
My dad, Daryl O'Brien - DOB as I refer to him here, was a regular selection in North Melbourne side in the mid and late 60s. Playing most of his games as a tagger on the unglamorous half-back line, he wasn't a football superstar - even the newspapers of the time use terms like "under-rated" and "underestimated"- but many of opponents that are better-known today (Dean, Barassi, Skilton, Tuddenham, Vagg, Northey, Baldock, Somerville) rated him as one of their toughest opponents. DOB was runner-up to Noel Tealsdale in North's Best and Fairest in 1964 and represented Australia in the Galahs tour of 1968. I was only four years old when DOB retired, so I don't remember him playing for the Kangaroos and he's not one to dwell on past glories. Fortunately, my Grandmother kept a

Welcome To My Kangaroo Page!
While doing a bit of Kangaroo research on the Internet some time ago, I could not help but notice that there was an incredible lack of Kangaroo stuff around! I found this to be darn unusual. A couple of months later, I took a bunch of Kangaroos pictures while on a business trip to Australia. I posted a few of these photos to this page to help fill the void. Nowadays, there seems to be quite a bit more Kangaroo stuff out there! I never did get around to putting together my own report, but I've added a few links to some places I have found worthy and informative enough to keep you busy until I get off my duff. I hope they help you find what you're looking for, and don't forget to check out my ever-popular Kangaroo pictures below! I have just added a few new links and deleted some old, stale ones. The next step will be to add some new images including Eastern Grey Kangaroos and maybe even some Euros, so check back soon! Since March 29, 1996 this page has been referenced
