KANSAS CITY
Pennsylvanian shales and limestones underlie Kansas City, which is noted for secondary use of underground space in room and pillar limestone mines. Kansas City straddles the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers and the terminus of Pleistocene glaciation, both of which have heavily influenced land usage. Floods occur in upland valleys such as Brush Creek as well as major rivers. Field trips feature Pennsylvanian stratigraphy, urban environmental geology and paleontology, secondary commercial usage of underground space, and Quaternary landscape evolution. Theme sessions and symposia will focus on health and the environment, urban geology, paleobiology and stratigraphy, and K-16 geoscience education. We encourage those interested in presenting papers at a symposium to contact the symposium organizers in advance of submitting abstracts.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The meeting organizers strongly encourage you to lodge at the Airport Hilton, the site of the meeting. Selected for its reasonable room rates, the Hilton Inn is a full service hotel with free in-room Web access, and exercise facilities ranging from swimming pools to basketball and tennis courts to a selection of cardiovascular fitness machines. Wheat State Whirlwind Goals:
  • To understand/appreciate origins of KU students.
  • To develop a deeper relationship with Kansas and its people so that we can gain a better understanding of their needs and hopes.
  • To experience a wide spectrum of Kansas people, heritage, and physical beauty.
  • To create a community within the University that crosses disciplinary boundaries.
Wheat State Whirlwind Benefits:
  • Improved public relations for the University
  • Improved cooperation/collaboration between KU campuses and KU faculty
  • Encouraged service to the State
  • Faculty retention
Wheat State Whirlwind
For the past five years, about 40 professors and administrators have boarded a coach at the University of Kansas in Lawrence for a "whirlwind" tour of the state in May. The Wheat State Whirlwind Tour endeavors to bring a select group of KU personnel into a closer relationship with Kansans through a five-day statewide tour and a separate one-day orientation to state government and higher education issues. The participants engage in discussions with the people of Kansas, learn what KU means to Kansans, and develop ideas on how KU's resources could be of further assistance to the Wheat State. The tour serves as a public relations project, better familiarizes the University with the needs of Kansans, introduces new KU faculty to their adopted home state, and allows the faculty to enjoy the rare opportunity of interacting with colleagues from other disciplines.

Welcome to the Kansas Water Office web page. The Kansas Water Office works with Kansans and the state's water resource agencies to develop the comprehensive State Water Plan. It's a multi-faceted plan that deals with issues including water quality, water conservation, water management, water-based recreation, public water supplies, flood management, and wetland and riparian management. F inancial support for the State Water Plan programs comes from all Kansans through fees, Economic Development Initiative Fund (lottery money), royalties on mined sand and the State General Fund (tax dollars). You’ll find at our site information on all of these topics. For instance, you may have heard about the general decline of the Ogallala Aquifer , the underground water source in western Kansas. You may not know that water resource groups are working diligently to help water users conserve and extend the life of the aquifer. A lot of that work may be made possible thanks to federal funds available through the 2002 Farm Bill’s Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). The Water Office helps communities establish water conservation plans. They do several things. For one, they help communities prepare should a drought occur as it did in 2002 in Kansas. As the water supplies grow tighter, communities take successively stricter actions to be sure all customers will be served. The Water Office also works with communities to insure that the water drawn from surface water (streams or lakes) in eastern Kansas or groundwater (Ogallala aquifer) in western Kansas and treated is not lost due to leaks in the delivery system. The costs of pumping, treating and delivering
