New Kansas Requirements for Fine Arts Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of arts advocates in our state, the Kansas State Department of Education recently approved new regulations for high school graduation that included one unit of fine arts. Requirements for fine arts programs in Kansas schools include several other stipulations: A component of the new QPA/ESEA regulations specifies that districts must “have in place quality assurance measures” at both the elementary and secondary levels programs to support learning and growth. Included in these are the computer literacy, counseling services, fine arts, language arts, library services, mathematics, physical education, science, services for students with special needs, and history and government. (SBR 91-31-17) One-hundred percent of those teaching core subjects must be fully certified/licensed in the subject they teach, including music, art and drama/speech. Local boards of education will decide which courses may be included as a fine art (as they do mathematics, science, etc.). The regulatory language that the board agreed upon states, “One unit of fine arts, which may include art, music, dance, theatre, debate and other similar studies selected by a local board of education.” (We’re working to have the word “debate” exchanged for “forensics.”) The fine arts graduation requirement will be in effect for freshman entering high school in 2005-2006, with an option to begin as early as 2003/04

The Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects serves as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) mandated by federal laws and regulations, and is responsible for oversight of all activities involving research with human subjects. T he University Research Compliance Office maintains this site to enhance access to information pertinent to the Kansas State University Research with Human Subjects program, and is continually under development and revision. We try to keep the information timely and accurate and will make every effort to correct errors brought to our attention. Applying to perform research with Human Subjects IRB Application forms WordPerfect Word 6.0 The application is a word processing document available in Word or WordPerfect format. At the prompt, choose "save it to disk" to complete the form in either word processing program. The shaded areas are text boxes designed to accommodate responses within the body of the application. As you type your answers, the text boxes will expand as needed. After completion, print the form and send the original and one copy to Room 1, Fairchild Hall. If you have any problems or questions regarding this process, please contact our office for assistance.
