Minoring in Kansas Studies
From border ruffians to buffalo commons, from trails to Beech aircraft, from John Brown to Linda Brown, from General Custer to General Eisenhower, from Carry Nation to Gordon Parks, from dust storms to center pivotsthe breadth and depth of the American experience is reflected in Kansas. The Center for Kansas Studies at Washburn University encourages the study of the history and culture of the state as a matter of gaining insight into oneself as a product of those forces. The Fellows of the Center are those Washburn faculty who offer courses which focus on the state and who benefit from the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and resources.
To support that exchange the Center sponsors a minor in Kansas Studies for Washburn students which is fulfilled by making application to the Center's director and taki ng fifteen hours from an approved list on a graded basis, with at least 6 hours at the upper division (300) level. For more information, please contact Assistant Professor Barbara Burgess. She can be reached in her office in Henderson Building Room 313. Her telephone is 231-1010, ext 1801 and her email address is zzburg@washburn.edu

Enter a City or US Zip: W elcome to Kansas, nicknamed the Sunflower State, but also known as the Jayhawk State, the Midway State, and the Wheat State. This region of plains and prairie is the breadbasket of the country, growing more wheat than any other state in the union. I n 1822, the Santa Fe Trail brought hundreds and hundreds of wagons through Kansas, and as the population grew, Kansas became a state in 1861. Cattle drives and railroads continued to change the face of the state, and Dodge City became home to the largest cattle market in the world, gaining notoriety in the process as the rough and tumbling home to the likes of Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson. Today, cattle, wheat, corn, and soybeans form the base for the agricultural economy. THE NAME: The state of Kansas was named after the river. The Kansas River was named by the French after the Kansas, Omaha, Kaw, Osage and Dakota Sioux Indian word "KaNze" meaning, in the Kansas language "south wind." The state name for Arkansas shares its origins with Kansas.

    Abbreviation:
KS Kansas is derived from the Siouan Kansa or Kaw, meaning "people of the south wind," who lived south of the settlements of the northern Great Plains. It was granted statehood in 1861, becoming the 34th state in the US. Kansas is located equidistant from the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. The geographic center of Northamerica is located in Osborne County. This spot is used as the central reference point for all maps produced by the government. Kansas leads the states in wheat production. In early summer, the vast wheat fields on the state's prairies look like golden seas of grain. One of Kansas' most famous towns is Dodge City, the Cowboy Capital of the World. Kansas has many reminders of its colorful past. One can still see the ruts made by covered wagons on the Santa Fe Trail. Tourists can visit the old forts that served as bases for United States cavalry campaigns against Native American tribes and a variety of local museums, showing the exciting days of cattle drives and gunslingers.
