Geography
Almost rectangular in shape and mostly part of the Great Plains , Kansas is famous for its seemingly endless fields of ripe golden wheat. The land rises more than 3,000 ft (914 m) from the eastern alluvial prairies of Kansas to its western semiarid high plains, which stretch toward the foothills of the Rocky Mts. The rise is so gradual, however, that it is imperceptible, although the terrains of the east and the west are markedly different. The state is drained by the Kansas and Arkansas rivers, both of which generally run from west to east. Topeka is the capital; other important cities are Wichita (the state's largest city)

REEVES The Kansas City Star For two years, Mark Vidovich's consulting job took him to St. Louis for a week of every month. While there, he enjoyed the amenities: the park system, the Cardinals and the Rams, the restaurants. "It's a great place," said Vidovich, who grew up visiting family in St. Louis. "But I prefer to live in Kansas City." Almost 100,000 more people choose to live in Kansas City, population 441,545, than St. Louis, population 348,189, according to 2000 census data released Wednesday. Kansas Citians laud their hometown for its livability, and the census data revealed lots of ways people are more comfortable here than in Missouri's other big city.

    Research:
My main interests lie in fluvial and glacial geomorphology and the reclamation of disturbed lands. I am currently studying the distribution of metals in floodplain soils of the Blackfoot River, Montana. This research involves mapping channel changes, and determining soil metal levels in lateral and vertical directions in the floodplain at 20 transect locations. I am also interested in the application of GIS and remote sensing technologies in these research areas. Further information on my research is available at the links listed below.

Kansas water-use trends reflect geography, weather, and population
    June 1999
U.S. Water News Online LAWRENCE, Kan. Kansans used less water in 1995 than in 1990 for public supplies, irrigation, and industrial purposes, even as overall population increased. Meanwhile, more water was used for livestock during 1995. A newly released fact sheet, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Kansas Water Office (KWO) and funded in part through the State Water Plan Fund, examines population and water-use data for 1990 and 1995 and offers explanations for variations among uses, years, and areas of the state. Withdrawals from ground and surface sources are illustrated for the largest categories of use in Kansas public supply, irrigation, industrial and mining, livestock, and thermoelectric power generation. Comparative data are presented for each of 12 major river basins to illustrate differences in population distribution, water-supply availability, and degree of industrial and agricultural activities in Kansas. About 87 percent of total annual nonpower-related withdrawals in Kansas are for irrigation. Most irrigation use is from groundwater sources in the western part of the state, which is underlain by the High Plains aquifer. All basins where irrigation is a significant use of water showed less use in 1995 than in 1990. About 21 percent less groundwater was used for irrigation in 1995 than in 1990, when drier weather prevailed. Statewide, about 15 percent more surface water was used for irrigation in 1995 than in 1990.
