Back to Home ... Family Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Family Posted on Thu, Jan. 30, 2003 Law forces schools to share information BY JOHN DIEDRICH The Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Brenda Dupont guards her phone numbers, determined to ward off telemarketers. She was shocked a few months ago when she received a call on her cell phone from an Army recruiter. The sergeant was looking for her teenage son, Paul, a high school senior. The recruiter told Dupont he obtained Paul's name and her cell number from the school. "That just floored me because I didn't give permission for them to give out the phone number," Dupont said. Turns out Dupont and other parents don't have to give permission for schools to hand out their children's name, address and home number. Under new federal education law, school districts across the nation must provide that information to military recruiters unless parents specifically tell them not to. Districts that don't comply will be visited by military officials and later get reported to the state's governor and congressional delegation. If they still refuse, the schools could risk losing federal aid.

T he doctoral program at Kansas State University including a specialization in military history was approved by the state Board of Regents in May 1965. Together with a longer standing and vigorous Master's, the doctoral program has grown deliberately and soundly during the ensuing years, following the faculty's belief that it should not turn out more graduates than there are appropriate positions for them to fill. Regarding all forms of professional historical work as equally valuablemuseum work, official history programs, publishing, as well as university and college teachingKansas State University's military historians have aimed to match the actual
national need for professionals in the field with the real interests of their students. This is the only military history graduate program authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The History Department has consistently sought to meet the varying needs of individual M.A. and Ph.D. students by responsibly adapting the general program to each specific case. The result is that students can develop a personal connection and close working relationship not only with their major professors but also with other members of their committees in major, minor, and supporting fields. At the same time, the students have the chance to bring their expectations and goals into alignment with the emerging opportunities in the historical profession.
In addition to their direct service through traditional teaching and degree programs, K.S.U.'s military historians have been actively involved with various units and bodies within the armed forces and branches of the federal government, providing expertise either on an individual basis or, at times, through institutional agreements. The individual research, writing, and publishing commitments of military history faculty at K.S.U. have extended this commitment to foster public education in the civic interest, as well as to work on national and international professional committees.

by Marc Curtis It happens often. I'll be at a dinner party with some clients, or on an airplane sitting next to strangers. The conversation eventually comes around to the question of, "Where are you from?" If you¹re like me (and you probably are if you're reading this!) you stumble for a second then say something like "well, I was born in San Francisco, but I never lived there." Then I mention that I am a Military Brat and one of two things happensthey either laugh and ask what you mean, or they say "Me too!" Often that leads to a mention of the fact that I have no "home town" to call my own. In December of 2000, I was among a small group who were invited to a meeting in Wichita, Kansas to see what the American Overseas Schools Historical Society is creating. Being one who never attended a school overseas I had somewhat of an attitude in the past of "gee, that's nicefor them!" But my perspective changed after meeting with Dr. Drysdale and the othersand particularly after a visit to the archives. The group had the opportunity to go to the archive building and look through some of the boxes of photos, yearbooks, documents and other items. It was almost like going through my mom's cedar chest and discovering tidbits of my life that bring back such great memories of childhood!

Military Brat Life
My Worst Year As A Brat
by Diane (Morency) Russell I remember when it was time for us to leave Germany, in 1961. It was one of the worse moves I have ever encountered. We had to have our household goods packed the day after Christmas and we left for the world in January 1961. I was excited that I was going home to see my family. We were from a small town in NJ and we did have a home there and my family was also there, in fact my brother and his family were living in our house. Even though my dad was in the, Army we always had a home. It was time for us to go. We went home by plane as we went over by ship. We where going to be stationed in Ft. Riley Kansas, Junction City was the town next to the post that we lived in. Upon our arrival at McQuire AFB, where we flew into, my brother was there to pick us up. We lived about a 45 minutes from Ft. Dix, NJ. It had snowed, and when we got off the plane we saw nothing but white. I like to mention that, in those days, the flights back from Germany were military, not civilian, like today and it sure is a different flight now. We headed home. When we arrived at my brother and sister-in-law's, we were surprised with a homecoming Christmas. They had left the tree up and had bought us gifts. My other brothers came to visit also. I had two little nieces and two little nephews and it was so nice to see them.

ABILENE, KS-If so, look in your attic, in "Fibber McGee's Closet," under the bed, or wherever you hide your relics from the "Nifty Fifties." We understand why you have never been able to part with them. They may have been the first new and modern things you owned, or the things with which you set up housekeeping. Perhaps they belonged to your mom or grandma. They deserve better, but what could you do? Most people just wrapped them in newspaper, and tucked them away with the thought that maybe they will come back in style someday.
