The field trip held in conjunction with the Coalition for Community Schools National Conference "Building the Movement for Community Schools" provided insight into this movement, how it is evolving in states and localities, as well as opportunities to learn about community partnerships designed to improve education and service outcomes for children and youth. Field trip participants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, and 21 st Century Community Learning Centers Program; Health and Human Services Regional Administration for Children and Family Programs; the office of Senator Christopher Bond; the House Committee on Education and the Workforce; the District of Columbia Public Schools; and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation:
  • Attended conference activities highlighting models, such as Beacons, Children’s Aid Society (CAS) community schools, California After School Partnerships, the United Way’s Bridges to Success, and Communities in Schools. (See AYPF field trip report, "Community School and Beacon Models in New York City," March 1, 2000 for a discussion of a CAS school, and a Beacon.) Explored issues affecting community and after-school programming (such as sustainability, financing, the capacity of organizations to implement these programs, managing and governing partnerships) with practitioners and policymakers.

KANSAS STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM EASY ONLINE SEARCHING AS KANSAS LIBRARIES GAIN ACCESS TO SIRS DISCOVERER DELUXE Boca Raton, FL, November 10, 2000 - Online information searching has become easier for Kansas students as nearly 1,800 Kansas libraries recently gained access to the SIRS Discoverer Deluxe general reference database. SIRS Discoverer Deluxe is available through Blue Skyways (www.skyways.org), a service of the Kansas State Library that provides Kansas citizens with easy access to global information resources. Statewide access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe is provided for all public libraries, schools, universities and colleges. Between 400,000 and half a million users will benefit from SIRS Discoverer Deluxe. According to Marc Galbraith, Director of the Kansas State Library's Reference Services Division, access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe brings Blue Skyways one step closer to creating a comprehensive library of online resources. "The Kansas State Library and the Reference Networking Committee are very pleased to provide our citizens, and especially our young people, with access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe, an educational, informative and age-appropriate tool," Galbraith said. The decision to purchase SIRS Discoverer stems from the state's search for a database addressing the needs of students in grades 1-9. "Kansas school children are expected to find quality information resources to complete school assignments, and they need the experience of using computers and online exploration to solve problems," said Galbraith. SIRS Discoverer Deluxe's "multi-faceted, colorful and fun" interface helped the database clinch a place among the Kansas State Library's existing online resources.

Specifically, you ask whether the provision allowing a unified school district to charge a nonresident pupil for attendance at school within the unified school district violates Section 6 of Article 6 of the Kansas Constitution. K.S.A. 72-1046 establishes the school districts in which a child may attend school. Generally, a child may attend school in the district in which the child lives. K.S.A. 72-1046. However, under certain circumstances, a child may attend school in a district in which the child does not live. See K.S.A. 72-1046; K.S.A. 1997 Supp. 72-1046a; 72-8233. http://www.ksu.edu/artsci/phpp/predent.html
Pre-Dentistry
Pre-Dentistry is not a degree granting program. A bachelor's degree in the area of the student's choice is highly recommended by dental schools. In addition, the student must complete the courses required by the dental school and submit acceptable scores from the Dental Admission Test (DAT). Requirements for dental schools vary and some courses not listed here may be useful, so consultation with the Pre-Dental advisor is recommended. Visit the American Dental Education Association web site ( www.adea.org ) for individual school requirements. There are no dental schools in Kansas but Kansas residents can attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry for in-state tuition. Prerequisites and application deadlines change. Every effort is made to keep KSU curriculum guides up to date. They are reviewed regularly and modified when changes are made at the professional schools. Advisors are diligent in maintaining regular contact with representatives from the professional schools. Because the ultimate authority on prerequisites is the professional school, students are encouraged to verify that their coursework fulfills requirements with representatives of the professional schools. Students who have taken prerequisite courses at colleges or universities other than KSU should verify with representatives of the professional schools that this coursework fulfills the requirements they intended it to fulfill. Web addresses and contact information for representatives for each school are provided on the curriculum guides.

Howard University was the epicenter of the civil rights movement and was the venue for much of the planning of the Brown litigation.
