General Information
KU is a Best Value
In addition, the 10th edition of the Gourman Report, which is used by professional counselors to help students identify the best schools, ranks the KU Undergraduate Program in Architectural Engineering as #3 in the country.
History of KU ARCE
The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering (BS ARCE) degree program at the University of Kansas was begun in 1912. The first two BS ARCE degrees were awarded in 1916 to Edward Tanner (designer of KU's Danforth Chapel) and Willis Whitten (who soon after died in service in Europe). Julia Carmen, the first female graduate of the KU School of Engineering, completed her BS ARCE in 1920. About 25 to 40 BS ARCE students now graduate each year. The Bachelor of Architecture (B ARCH) degree program at KU was started by the Architectural Engineering faculty in 1920. The BS ARCE and B ARCH programs were in a combined department in the School of Engineering until the School of Architecture and Urban Design was organized in 1969. Through a management agreement, the undergraduate ARCE degree program is offered jointly by the two schools with the School of Architecture and Urban Design handling admissions and the School of Engineering overseeing graduation requirements. This arrangement offers undergraduates the benefits of both schools. The Master of Science in Architectural Engineering (MS ARCE) degree program began in 1955, and a Master of Construction Management (M CM) was added in 1999. These graduate ARCE degree programs are offered by KU's Graduate School and are managed by the School of Engineering's Graduate Division.

BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM G. KING JR.
Retired March 31, 1971 Brigadier General William G. King Jr., is director of special projects, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and has additional duty as deputy commander for satellite programs, Space and Missile Systems Organization, Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif. General King was born in Topeka, Kan., in 1918. He attended Kansas public schools and graduated from the Dodge City High School in 1937. He attended Kansas State University where he received a commission from the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps Program as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. Active military duty during World War II interrupted his undergraduate work. During World War II, General King spent 39 months in the Pacific Theater of Operations serving as an antiaircraft artillery officer. He returned to Kansas State University to complete a final semester work for a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and graduated in January 1946. He accepted a regular Army commission in 1947 and reentered active duty at Fort Warren, Wyo., with the Aviation Engineers Training School as a group commander. General King became a member of the U.S. Air Force upon its formation in 1947. In 1949 after completing the guided missile course at Fort Bliss, Texas, he was assigned to the newly formed Joint Long Range Proving Center at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. In this assignment he participated in a variety of activities including the initial exploration and surveys of the islands that became the downrange stations of the Air Force Eastern Test Range. He also served as the station commander at Grand Bahama Island Auxiliary Air Base.

Funding: Topeka school officials explain the effects of budget cuts on education, ask for increases

The Capital-Journal

Members of the Shawnee County Legislative Delegation, Topeka Public Schools Board of Education members and TPS administrators listened Monday as Unified School District 501 superintendent Robert McFrazier detailed some of the district's 2002-2003 budget.
THAD ALLTON/The Capital-Journal
Shawnee County legislators said they hope information they acquired during a luncheon with Topeka school officials Monday will give them more firepower as they try to convince their colleagues to increase funding for education. "It is important that all members of the delegation know first hand exactly what the repercussions are going to be in our community (for not properly funding education)," Rep. Nancy Kirk, D-Topeka, said after the luncheon. "That we as individuals will be able to change the whole movement of the House or the Senate or the Legislature, I don't know. But I am hopeful that we'll have more support for maybe an increase of $10, $12, or $20 dollars on the base (per-pupil expenditure)." Sen. Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka, said he supports an enhancement package proposed by Gov. Bill Graves during his State of the State address in January.

Introduction
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment produces a vast array of health and environmental education materials. These fact sheets and brochures address public health issues under the agency's jurisdiction. Public health issues are those that can be impacted by the implementation of community based intervention strategies, like hand-washing to control an outbreak of Shigellosis or recycling to reduce the burden on our solid waste landfills. [Top of Page] There are some health problems you won't see mentioned here. It's not because we think they are unimportant. Rather, we focus on public health concerns. There are a number of Web sites around the world that can be searched to find information on those other health issues. [Top of Page] As with any advice, it is general in nature. On health problems, everyone should check with his or her physician for specific guidance. If after reviewing KDHE information you have questions about your personal health, contact your family physician. If you do not have a physician, you may want to contact the local Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) office or local county health department. You may be eligible for an SRS program or local health officials may know of community health resources to assist you.
