Candidate A school that has begun its initial accreditation cycle to become accredited. Candidate status Schools, which enter the Quality Performance Accreditation process for the first time, are assigned an accreditation status of “candidate” and retain that status until they reach the end of the first cycle and are designated “accredited” or “accredited conditionally.” Once a school completes the first QPA cycle, it does not retain “candidate” accreditation status. Carnegie unit requirements A credit representing the completion of a core of high school courses. Developed in the early 1900s to set norms for curriculum and course time in public schools across the country, these are named after the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which first suggested the practice. Education Infrastructure: Coffey County's excellent schools, kindergarten through senior high school, are un-paralleled by any other county in the state. Our facilities, with a variety of educational programs, services and highly trained professional staff, all provide a strong indication of community support. Educational programs are also available for pre-kindergarten children. The education resources for business/industrial training include computer classes, courses in business/management and machine training for specific equipment. All in all, this creative environment really makes the grade.
Public Schools: The Burlington Lower Elementary School places strong emphasis on the mastery of basic academic skills and a competent support staff is available to assist with special needs and interests of children. The Burlington Upper Elementary School offers a gradual transition from self-contained classrooms to departmentalized classrooms according to subject area. Burlington High School offers its students a well-balanced curriculum in both academic and vocational skill areas. About 80% of the senior graduating class continue their education in colleges, universities and technical schools. Evening adult education courses are offered at Coffey County schools through Allen County Community College in Iola and Flint Hills Technical College at Emporia. Day Care facilities are represented by 2 centers, 1 group day care home, 15 licensed day care homes, 22 registered day care homes and 2 pre-schools. Tax credits are offered against Kansas income tax liability for businesses providing child day care services to employees. These credits apply to tax payers who pay for or provide child day care services for their employees or that provide facilities and necessary equipment for child day care services.

Welcome to Derby, Kansas! DERBY EDUCATION PUBLIC SCHOOL : Elementary Schools-8; Progressive Learning Center-1; Sixth Grade Center-1; Middle School-1; High School-1 Alternative High School-1. ENROLLMENT : Total Derby USD 260 enrollment was 6,505.6 kindergarten through twelfth grade as of September, 1996. Elementary (K-5) enrollment was 3,276, Sixth Grade Center enrollment was 521, Middle School (7-8) enrollment was 1,082, High School (9-12) enrollments was 1,841. (Alternative High School enrollment was 100). AVERAGE CLASSROOM SIZE : District wide the average classroom consists of 23 students. Elementary classrooms - 23; Middle School - 22; and the High School has an average of 24 students per classroom. EDUCATION COST PER PUPIL : $3,815.84 (this is the district average for all grades kindergarten through twelfth). DERBY USD 260 SERVICE AREA : The 50 square miles of the school district cover all of the city of Derby and beyond the city limits into large portions of Sedgwick County, including the Oaklawn/Sunview area, McConnell Air Force Base, Towne Parc, Oak Knoll, and Salem Township. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM : The Derby Unified School District 260 is a diversified educational institution. Although the heart of the school program is basic education for youngsters in kindergarten through grade twelve, district programs actually serve students from pre-school through adulthood. Education is offered for both "regular" and "special education" students, and a variety of vocational and technical training programs are available. USD 260 schools offer options in teaching and learning styles. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities from athletics to student council supplement the academic program. No tuition is charged for public schooling in USD 260. There are student fees.
