In 1570-1580, Yasy known as a prosperous stronghold in the Syr Darya River regionbecame a political and religious center of the Southern Kazakhstan. At that time the Turkestan government started coining its own currency. Since 19th century, Turkestan has underwent significant re-constructions and re-planning, and today this modern city with unique ancient history is cherished as a historical monument and is being visited by thousands of pilgrims and tourists. The reconstructed and renovated Hodja Akhmed Yassawi Mausoleum towers as a symbol of today's Turkestan which is successfully gaining back the past glory of one of the most educational and cultural centers of Kazakhstan and Central Asia on its 1500th Anniversary.
TURKESTAN: THE CULTURAL RENAISSANCE OF CENTRAL ASIA The celebration of the foundation of Turkestan, now fifteen centuries old, is a remarkable event not just for the city itself, but also for the Republic of Kazakhstan and all Turkic peoples. Our goal today is to continue the development of Turkestan as an important cultural, spiritual, scientific, and trade center in Central Asia.

Kazakhstan
HISTORY
Archaeological excavations indicate that the south of Kazakhstan was inhabited by man as early as the Palaeolithic Era and tribes were breeding cattle and producing bronzeware by the middle of the second millennium BC. By the beginning of the first millennium BC, the Saks tribe occupied the territory of the steppes, the Savromat tribe the north and west of Kazakhstan, the Kangues the Syr-Daria River area and the Usuns (whose writing, weapons and jewellery have been preserved) the south. Later, the Huns, who bred cattle, made handicrafts and possessed a well-organised army, occupied Kazakhstan. By the fourth century AD, most of the Saks and Usuns had moved west and new individual states began to appear, such as Westturkic Khanate, which was established by Turkish tribes trading on the Silk Road. During the eighth and ninth centuries, the Syr-Daria region and lands around the Aral Mountains were settled by Kimak tribes, the largest and strongest being the Kipchaks, considered the primary ancestors of the present-day Kazakhs. The tenth century was a time of considerable economic, social and cultural progress. Islam was declared the state religion and some outstanding works of literature in the Turkic language were written. The Mongols invaded in the 13th century and Genghis Khan and his army completely destroyed most of the towns and settlements and portioned the land out between his sons. However, by the 15th century, the Kazakh Khanate state was formed, consisting of the remaining descendants of the Saks, Usuns and Kangues of the West Turkic Khanate, and the gradual revival of agriculture, urban culture and trade relations took place.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... KAZAKHSTAN The people of this region are of Mongol and Turkic origin who presence in Kazakhstan dates back thousands of years. Islam came to the area between the 7th and 9th centuries and the Mongols held sway from the early 13th through the mid-15th centuries. At this point the Kazakhs were recognized as a distinct entity but eventually infighting resulted in a tri-part split into the larger, Middle, and Lesser Hordes. When the Mongols again invaded in the mid-1600s, the Kazakhs turned to Russia for protection; a century later, Russia completely dominated the Kazakh lands.
The situation worsened after 1861 when Russian and Ukrainian peasants flowed into Kazakhstan after the freeing of the serfs and were given Kazakh lands. (This influx of Russians and Ukrainians was not limited to this period it continued throughout the first seven decades of the 20th century as well such that by 1979, there were more Russians than native Kazakhs in the region.) Simmering resentments led to a major rebellion in 1916. In suppressing the uprising, the Russians killed thousands. The Communist revolution the next year plunged Kazakhstan into civil war. Defeated, Kazakhstan became part of Russia as an autonomous entity, eventually attaining the status of one of the Soviet Union's republics (1936). Independence was declared in 1991 and Kazakhstan became a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States that year.
