Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual University to host Australian Library Officials
FRANKFORT, KY (Jan. 19, 2000) - Impressed and inspired by the great strides in education support and information access Kentuckians enjoy through the Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual Library, officials with the National Library of Australia will visit the Bluegrass State this week to learn more about KCVL and how its technology and resources may be used to enhance Australia's electronic library services. The National Library of Australia and KCVL share a common objective to provide access for all their citizens to a comprehensive collection of domestic and international library materials and documentary resources. "The Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual Library is an excellent example of the kind of service the National Library of Australia wants to offer to Australian citizens", said David Toll, Deputy Director General of the National Library. "Its services to Kentuckians enable access to a wide range of information sources, which is of great importance in the information-based global economy." The Australian library delegation will arrive in Kentucky Jan. 20 and will meet with officials of the Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual Library and its parent agency the Council on Postsecondary Education Jan. 21.

Making Parents More Powerful A parent's involvement can make all the difference in a child's success in school. But in today's world, involvement means far more than making sure homework gets done or pitching in on a fund-raising effort, as important as those things are. Involvement means becoming an informed, active partner who works with teachers and school leaders to improve student achievement. Becoming an involved parent offers important and challenging opportunities to improve our schools. But the prospect of engaging at such a level can be a bit overwhelming, especially for people who have had limited interaction with their children's schools. The Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership is designed to make parents more powerful as they become effective advocates for improved education and higher achievement for all students. The institute seeks to create a new level of parent engagement in the state, and it reaches all parents - including those who have the most difficulty being involved. The institute is sponsored by the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence and offers participating parents an exciting curriculum that:
  • gives them information and data as well as skills to expand their role in their children's education and the larger education community;

    Kentucky's partnership efforts could be described as one of a dynamic, shared progression. It would be impossible to point to a single entity or decision maker in Kentucky's ongoing efforts to see the arts assume an essential role in education. Instead of discussing "partnership" as static and something that can be pointed to, a more accurate construct for Kentucky might be that of a definable group of "committed players." As needed each player brings to the fore resources to accomplish the goal of arts for all students. However, whether formal or informal, partnership and collaboration pays off. Kentucky's hard work over the past 15 years has yielded important progress in arts and education reform. Currently, the key organizations in Kentucky's fluid partnership effort include the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet, Kentucky Alliance for Arts Education, Kentucky Collaborative for Teaching and Learning, Kentucky Department of Education, the Kentucky Citizens for the Arts, the Kentucky Center for the Arts and Kentucky Educational Television.

    This World Wide Web (WWW) site, developed by the The Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative, contains online courses in a range of subjects including mathematics, science, English, and practical living. These courses, designed for children of migrant farm workers in grades 6 to 12, aim to address the low academic achievement among migrant students and the lack of continuity of education among migrant students moving form one location to another. The courses employ technology to strengthen the academic achievement in core curriculum areas, increase comfort level and skills in using technology by teachers and students, and decrease the drop out rate among migrant students. The goal is to increase the number of migrant students who complete the GED examination, increase parent involvement, and improve continuity of education for the students. Spanish translated courses are available for some topics.
