From elevations of about 2,000 ft (610 m) on the Cumberland Plateau in the southeast, where Black Mt. (4,145 ft/1,263 m) marks the state's highest point, Kentucky slopes to elevations of less than 800 ft (244 m) along the western rim. The narrow valleys and sharp ridges of the mountain region are noted for forests of giant hardwoods and scented pine and for springtime blooms of laurel, magnolia, rhododendron, and dogwood. Unfortunately, these forests have suffered from the effects of acid rain . To the west, the plateau breaks in a series of escarpments, bordering a narrow plains region interrupted by many single conical peaks called knobs. Surrounded by the knobs region on the south, west, and east and extending as far west as Louisville is the bluegrass country, the heart and trademark of the state.

Kentucky GeoQuest In this KET-produced series, a young geographer named Molly is at work on the next atlas of Kentucky. Much to her amazement, she acquires the services of a talking cardinal, Ricky Redbird, who, unfortunately, has little knowledge of the place he represents as the official state bird. To learn about Kentucky, Ricky joins Molly on her cross-state quest to document the rich history of the Kentucky landscape and examine present-day life in the Bluegrass State.

It is bordered by West Virginia and Virginia (E); Tennessee (S); the Mississippi R., across which lies Missouri (SW); and Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, all across the Ohio R. (W, N). From elevations of about 2,000 ft (610 m) on the Cumberland Plateau in the southeast, where Black Mt. (4,145 ft/1,263 m) marks the state's highest point, Kentucky slopes to elevations of less than 800 ft (244 m) along the western rim. Surrounded by the knobs region on the south, west, and east and extending as far west as Louisville is the bluegrass country, the heart and trademark of the state. To the south and west lie the rolling plains and rocky hillsides of the Pennyroyal, a region that takes its name from a species of mint that grows abundantly in the area. There, underground streams have washed through limestone to form miles of subterranean passages, some of the notable ones being in Mammoth Cave National Park.

Showing 10 counties rather that the 25 in existence then, the roads of the time seem fairly well located, although the pre-settler trails are not shown.
c.1795. Plan of Franklinville, in Mason County, Kentucky. Published by William Winterbotham in An Historical View of the United States. This shows one of several model utopian speculative towns featured in maps by Barker, Anderson, and others of early Kentucky. The towns were shown to attract settlers to the area, but were never intended to be, and were not, built.
A Map of KENTUCKY, Drawn from Actual Observations. By John Filson. Published November 23, 1793, by JOHN STOCKDALE, Piccadilly. The typical comment about Filson's work is that it shows a distorted or perverted view of Kentucky geography in the eastern and western portions, while the center is conceded to be accurate. The Filson was a striking accomplishment of American map-making in the 18th century, correctly presenting the three counties of Virginia making up the territory of Kentucky at that time, Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln.

    Geography of Kentucky
Kentucky possesses over 40,000 square miles; ranking 37th in area among the statesbetween Tennessee (36th) and Indiana (38th). While not a large state, it is a diverse one geographically. Kentucky consists of three distinct geographic areas: 1) The Appalachian (or Cumberland) Plateau of Eastern Kentucky. 2) The Gulf Coastal Plain of Western Kentucky 3) The Interior Low Plateau of Central KY: including the Lexington Plain (or Bluegrass) and the Highland Rim (or Pennyrile) Although Kentucky now classifies as an urban environment, nearly half of Kentucky's land is forest area. The state's elevation ranges from a high of 4,145 feet in Harlan County (SE KY) to a low of 260 feet in Fulton County (SW KY). Despite some environmental concerns, the government decades ago constructed several dams in Kentucky forming many lakes. Now in addition to a steady water supply, these lakes constitute a major source of tourism. Kentucky maintains 47 parks and recreation areas throughout the commonwealth, while the National Park Service operates three sites: Mammoth Cave National Park, Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site, and Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. The longest known cave system in the world, Mammoth Cave, remains the state's most popular tourist location. (Legislative Research Commission. Kentucky Government. Frankfort, KY: Informational Bulletin No. 137 (Revised), 1994, pages 1-14.) I'll post pics up as soon as I get them from home.
