Coalition's confidence grows

U.S. forces set up a base in central Baghdad and a warplane dropped bunker-busting bombs aimed at President Saddam Hussein and his two sons. As the coalition's confidence grew, President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair looked beyond the war, declaring that Iraq would soon be liberated.

Curb school junk food sales for the sake of kids
A pretty 10-year old girl with long brown hair flashed me an anxious smile. "I'm gonna lose 10 pounds," she said before she even stepped on the scale. "My mom is gonna help me. I didn't used to be fat." I was taken aback. When I signed on to help the nurse do height and weight measurements at my son's elementary school, I thought it would be an easy morning. Instead, I found myself searching for the right words to soothe the feelings of a child I didn't know. "Oh, honey, I wouldn't worry about it. You look great to me," I said, and patted her on the shoulder. Truth was, she looked overweight. And so did her friend. That day I recorded too many boys and girls in 4th and 5th grade who weighed as much or more than I do. Hearing the obesity statistics on the news was one thing, measuring my community's overweight children with my own hands was another. I felt despondent. I hadn't anticipated this heartbreak.

This program deals specifically with the mission to create a balanced awareness of forests and the wood industry in public schools and among the general populace.
Awareness of what the wood industry is all about is very important to the continued growth and well being of Kentucky's wood industry. The importance of the awareness program is that the industry is viewed as low tech, low paying, and with poor prospects for the future.
One problem is the lack of public awareness of the importance of Kentucky's wood products and importance of responsible forestry in that role. The problem can be attacked through educating the public on managing the resources and minimizing impacts through proper forest management.
The objectives of the program are:
    • create events emphasizing the importance of wood products to the economy and Kentuckians way of life both urban and rural
    • emphasize positive interactions between nature and harvesting of wood products
    • participate in industry trade association events demonstrating the versatility of Kentucky wood products
    • provide a resource to Kentucky teachers by demonstrating and providing KERA based instructional activities
    • utilize the mobile classroom for on-site, hands on training opportunities with specialized components not offered anywhere in the state

The College of Arts and Sciences offers courses to prepare students for admission to professional schools of medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, as well as others. While admission requirements vary by program and from school to school, the above professional schools generally have the courses listed below as common requirements: General biology w/ lab 2 semesters General inorganic chemistry w/ lab 2 semesters General organic chemistry w/ lab 2 semesters General physics w/ lab 2 semesters English 2 semesters Calculus
(Or other college mathematics 1 semester
2 semesters) More information including specific requirements for some schools is available in the Advising Center. If you have an interest in one or more of the health professions, you should also contact professional schools you are considering for detailed information well ahead of time for making application. And remember that schools can and do make changes in their requirements from one year to the next. You should prepare to have completed all the required coursework (and perhaps some supplemental coursework), take the appropriate admission exam, and make application to professional school about a year in advance of the expected date of matriculation. If you are on a four-year track to graduate, this falls toward the end of your junior year. All of the professional health fields are highly competitive and require a demonstrated, sustained high level of competence and performance. If you are considering making application to a professional school in the health field, you are strongly encouraged to pursue a bachelor's degree, although professional schools do not require nor even recommenda specific degree. A few very well prepared students may be admitted to some professional schools as early as the completion of their junior year in college. However, the majority of professional schools give preference to those applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree.

In the days that followed, e-mail after e-mail from high school journalism teachers and advisers alike repeated the same message - thanks for putting on a great 2002 Kentucky High School Journalism Association convention. The daylong May 1 convention at Louisville's Galt House East drew 785 high school students making it the largest KHSJA gathering yet. Adding professional journalists and guests, the noon awards luncheon included more than 850 participants. Pre-convention activities began the evening before with the Pizza With the Pros session and a dance. Students - about 200 of them - dined with and were able with talk with journalism pros Chris Poynter of The Courier-Journal, Bob Sokoler of WHAS Radio, Chris Parente of WAVE-TV, Chip Cosby of The Herald-Leader, Mike Jones of LEO and Tom Heiser of The Courier-Journal Online. Student questions ranged from "How much money do you earn?" to "Who's had the biggest influence on your career?" The first activity the next morning was a joint session involving all students and a panel of journalists. Panelists included Pam Platt of The Courier-Journal, Tom Caudill of The Herald-Leader, Mark Hebert from WHAS-TV and Lynda Umfress, a retired journalism teacher and adviser from Bourbon County High School.

Unfortunately, this lunchtime diet is common in schools across Kentucky. Fortunately, somebody cares and is trying to do something about it.

    NOTES FROM THE FIELD:
Education Reform in Rural Kentucky Volume 7, Number 1, March 2000
KERA: A Recap The primary goal of the reform legislation was to ensure that all students achieve learning goals in six areas: (1) basic communications and math skills; (2) the core concepts in mathematics, the sciences, arts, humanities, social studies, and practical living; (3) self-sufficiency; (4) responsible group membership; (5) thinking and problem-solving; and (6) integration and application of knowledge from all subject areas. (The 1994 General Assembly, in response to concerns that the state was teaching and testing values, passed legislation that prohibited the state from testing students on goals 3 and 4. The goals themselves, however, are still in effect.) Through school-based decision-making councils, schools were given the autonomy to determine how to help students achieve the goals. A testing system that was partially performance based was put in place to drive instruction, measure progress toward the goals, and hold schools accountable. In addition, a nongraded primary program was mandated to give students a positive start in school and to mirror the kinds of practices that would help students achieve KERA goals. Finally, a number of support programs were instituted that schools could employ to help students overcome barriers to learning, including preschool programs for at-risk and handicapped children; extended school services for students who need additional time to meet the goals; integrated services centers to help students overcome social, emotional, and physical barriers to learning; and technology in the classroom.
