The Great Seal of Kentucky
K entucky's official seal was adopted in 1792, six months after Kentucky gained statehood. The seal is a simple rendition of two men, one in buckskin, and the other in more formal dress. The two men are facing each other and clasping hands. The outer ring of the seal is adorned with the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky", and within the inner circle is the motto "United we stand, Divided we fall." T he official act of the General Assembly in December 1792 stated: Be it enacted by the General Assembly, that the Governor be empowered and is hereby required to provide at the public charge a seal for this Commonwealth; and procure the same to be engraved with the following device, viz; 'Two friends embracing, with the name of the state over their heads and around about the following motto: United we stand, divided we fall." T he two men on the seal haven't stood still for two centuries, however. Various versions have pictured both men dressed in buckskin, or both men in formal dress, men with and without hats, men with beards, men with wigs, and hand clasps that have ranged from simple handshakes to full embraces.

School Board Sets June 4 as Last Day [Article written by Lori Harrison from THE MESSENGER] The last day of class for students in the Hopkins County Schools will be June 4, under a plan approved Monday by the Board of Education. The district will take the five disaster days the General Assembly allowed for Kentucky schools that missed at least 10 days because of wintry weather. Hopkins County closed 13 days for snow. “This bill requires certified and classified personnel to work the length of their contract,” Superintendent James Lee Stevens said in a news release. That means certified staff, classified instructional aides, food service workers and pupil transportation personnel have five days to make up. The decision on when staff make-up days will be has not yet been made, Stevens said. The district will plan the make-up sessions for food service and pupil transportation, and at least two of the days for certified staff. School principals and district personnel will plan the remaining days for teachers and the five days for instructional aides. Gov. Paul Patton must still sign the budget bill.
